My Dad is trying to put in a new switch, and I have read some posts about it describing using needle nose, or some special tool to remove these two collars with lines in it, but he doesn't see any collars and can't get the knob off, He grabbed it from behind and tried to turn it but not working... Anyone have a very basic step by step info???

if you don't have the tool with 2 prongs , then 2 small(mini) screwdrivers and turn the bezel nut. the thin needle nose pliers work also

To get to knob off just pull it out. Its got a D shape end and can only go back in One Direction.
As far as the Chrome housing holding the switch... I just used a pair of pliers grab the outside and spun it off as it's threaded on

Lefty Loosey righty tighty

There's a little button you have to push to release the knob and shaft. To reinstall, it just pushes back in & snaps in place. Then you have a lot more room to get at the collar.

You're thinking headlight switch. The OP was talking about the wiper switch.

So maybe your dad is at the wrong switch?
That little button described above is on the headlight switch. That knob and stem are formed together, goes in and out of the switch as 1 piece. Its a pull switch. How often would that knob be pulled off if made in the more typical manner? Anyway...
This wiper switch knob once had a small hex set screw hidden in under side. Later model knobs have a tempered steel tooth inside the knob holding it to the stem. I don't know exact year model the set screw was deleted. I do know that little steel tooth could fall out of the knob when the knob is removed from the stem, generating a treasure hunt LOL. and yes both switches have a chrome bezel nut drawing them in place. Counter clockwise force to the notches in the nut should unscrew them. There are special tools for these bezels nuts but most of us get by without. Hope this helps
