There should also be some numbers on the front of the block stamped right below the left head. They may be a little easier to access.

Leadfoot is exactly right, you might have to scrape some paint and grime off to see them.
There is a small pad on the front of the driver's side just below where the head and the block meet that has the numbers on it.
