need help on this one bought a motor has a roller cam in it [no cam card] some one stole the springs ,retainers ,push rods etc off the heads before i bought it. the motor was built in a shop but dont know who question can i take the timing chain and gear off the cam [ so i can see kind and cam part #] to buy the correct spring with out messing up the cam degree ? thanks

Why not just pull it out and re degree it? Its not too hard if you take your time and get a degree wheel.

On a billet roller there's usually a part # or other info etched in with an electric vibrating tool. Pull the timing gear and see. Mark the gears at TDC and put your own 'dots' on it, (use a straight edge from the center of the cam bolt to the middle of the crank snout) and have at it. Watch out if there's an offset keyway in it, and if so, pay attention to which way the offset is pointing in case it comes out of the cam. Having said all that, once I got the cam card I'd STILL check the previous shop's degreeing in. It's on YOU once you turn that key.

If you line up the dots, take the chain and cam sprocket off, don't move the crank at all, and then reverse the process when you put the cam back in, then you should be back where you started.

IHMO, borrow/buy a dial indicator and a degree wheel, and measure it yourself to find out the general cam timing and lifts. Then reverse engineer to the cam.

Put a wheel on it. While it may have numbers on it, regrinds are extremely popular with rollers.
