This is the original numbers matching block to my 1 of 58 GTS convertible.
Anyone think it can be saved?
Maybe welded then sleeved??

If people can cut that block down to a v twin or inline four and make it run, it can be saved.

Can't you see the picture in my original post? I can?
It's on the left side, above the lifter valle

That's a bad Crack, in the valley near the deck..that's under water pressure, cooling system pressure...maybe weld, but why it cracked can still be why it cracks again...

Are you talking about what looks like a really big crack in the valley above #3? If so, that looks bad....If I am seeing it right, part of the water jacket is pushed waaaay out of alignment. Looks like a solid water freeze-up or a small piece of dynamite went off in the water jacket.

Have it welded by a professional shop that specializes in cast iron repairs. Not a bit deal to do, just may cost a bit more than most want to spend. Since it's a rare numbers matching block/car, I would not hesitate to weld it.

I am not at all loathe to fix stuff like this but I would want to see all where it goes in detail; if it goes down near the lifter area, that concern me.

Yep, need to know if it goes into a water jacket or oil passage...

Thanks for all the advise guys!
I appreciate it.
I'm going to start a tread on my restoration soon.
Too bad, matching number block and 4 speed transmission too!
Oh well, guess I see if someone around here can weld it, yes, looks like someone left water in it.
Maybe it will be a wall hanger???

Here's what will have to be done to fix it. Each end of the crack will have to be found. Not "maybe" found, but FOUND.

Then, a hole will have to be drilled at each end of the crack. This stops the crack from continuing.

Next, it will have to be welded by some who KNOWS how to weld cast iron. All that said, YES, it can be fixed. It will not be cheap.

Thx RustyRatRod
I'll have to search for a shop that can do that in NE.
I have several 340's plus a 416 stroker I will be dropping in until I can get it repaired.
Car is just in the beginning phase of resto, so I have plenty of time.

it can be fixed, not a big deal for someone that welds castings every day, all day. clean it, grind the crack to a v groove, preheat it. I work at a steel foundry, u would not believe how much welding we do. the other key is the weld wire needs to match the base material. we have about 20 different types of weld wire, each in some mig, stick and tig. I do not think a sleeve is a good idea, cuz that would require the bore to get bigger for the sleeve=thinner base metal. shop around for someone that u feel confident in, or contact me. also-a important part of any quality weld that u want to last-post weld heat treat/stress relief.

I know someone that had a similar crack above the lifters. A speciality cast iron repair shop that did a lot of Diesel engines and other repairs repaired it. They had a special process to drill the crank ends, grind open the crack, heat up the block and then weld the area. Cool down was also controlled. They then machined the deck. You coumd not see the repair when they were done. Block then passed a post repair pressure test. Look for a speciality shop and ask around about their reputation to perform proper repairs.

I agree with RRR.

If it's done correctly, there will be minimal distortion. If it's done wrong it will pull everything out, including the decks, the main line and the cam tunnel.

I'd try and fix it.

That is for sure a water freezing problem. That's what antifreeze is for.

BUMMER.

Thank you very much guys!
I'm going to look into marcohotrod's shop, he's somewhat local to me.
Next state over.

Rocket
Where was that shop.
What a coincidence, the car came from Bridgeport CT.

The shop was in Montreal Canada.
I can look it up if you need it.

I work in quality control, my good friend wayne is the welder, I will talk to him tomorrow, he loves a challenge. he says if it fails, you get your $ back. drags at Epping this weekend!
