Daughter has a 2007 Chrysler 300 with the 3.5. It died on her at a red light today. I tried and tried to get it started but it wont. It sputters a little every time I crank it over like its trying to run but just wont. Acted to me like its out of gas and getting a drop or 2 everytime I crank it the way it will sputter up and die. The fuel pump is indeed running every time I turn the key to run. I swore it was just out of gas but we put some in and still the same thing.. Any know things with these cars that acts like this? I have to help her some how..Im just not familiar with the new mopar stuff..
Thanks

Did you get it home? throw a bit of gas or ether at the intake

Running doesn't necessarily mean pumping, so a fuel pressure check is in order but I would do a code check before anything else.

I am no expert here when it comes to a lot of the Mechanicals, but in my experience when you run a cars gas tank low and out of gas, it has a tendency to burn up the fuel pump.

Clean the idle air control solenoid and the throttle blade with good carb cleaner. May not be the direct issue, but WILL make it better if gummed up.
Any codes?
Disconnect battery in case computer had brainfart? (get codes pulled first)
Hold gas pedal to floor to get started and clean unburned fuel out...

Check the codes for crankshaft position sensor

Yes, crank and camshaft position sensors are highly suspect. My cam position sensor failed on my Breeze and it just cranked and cranked and cranked. With no sensor to fire the injectors you get squat. Mine was just a 1 bolt and harness plug change out, started right up after that. too bad they couldnt make a batch fire limp home mode.

Had a 08 300. Done same thing as yours. Timing belt was shot. 1500.00 dollar fix.

Check to see if the security light is flashing while it is cranking. If it is, the pcm could be suspect. I have replaced many. Also if you have a way to check the fuel pressure, see if it has at least 45 psi and pumps at least a quart in 30 seconds. If you can have someone with a generic OBD2 scanner check codes it will help

pcm's are troublesome with these? What about crank and cam sensors?

The LH platform was much worse for it, but I have replaced LX pcms also. Fuel pumps and sensors are far more common. I was just trying to give you another one of the issues that cause no starts in these. Like I stated, codes help very much toward diagnosing

how many miles on it?

right at 100k.. It sounds totally normal when turning over so i dont think the timing belts are at fault..
If the timing belt has not yet been changed, it is overdue. I've always changed mine in the 80k to 90k range.
Have you checked fuel pressure at the Schrader valve? Mine are several years older than yours, but I believe they have an auto shut down relay, which kills the ignition if fuel pressure is insufficient.

Possible compression check too if it is/was timing belt as valves may have gotten bent.
I went through the belt breakage BS on my 04 Pacifica....

If you want to check the timing belt, you can remove the upper bolts of the tin cover and pull back the cover far enough to see if cam is turning while someone cranks the engine. 3.5s sound normal cranking many times when the belt strips the teeth.

They towed it to some back yard mechanic and he cant figure it out.I dont know what to tell her, i dont know anything about newer chryslers, only the old ones..If it were closer i would try squirting some starting fluid and see what happens..

Does it have the 19 gal fuel tank? There is a recall for the fuel tanks on them due to the rollover valve becoming distorted and shutting off the fuel flow. The NTHSB forced Chrysler to do a recall and give an owner independent lifetime warranty on the 19 gal fuel tanks as a result of stalling and non-start issues. I think the 3.5L AWD cars had the 19 gal tanks in 2007. If you have the 19 gal tank, Chrysler will replace it for free under the lifetime warranty.
