440 head numbers

Hey guys getting ready to start a 440 build with my dad for his roadrunner the question is we have motor home heads with big valves but open chambers we have found a guy will all sorts of 440 heads, whats some good number heads? the motor is going to be a mild street rod/cruiser should we just get a set with the biggest valves and closed chambers?
 
I'm running 452's on my 440 with a ton of work done to them I'm also using K/B 236's so my engine is not for street use.
452's on a 0 deck block should give ya some good street manners what cam and trany are you using?

You'll never feel the difference in 915, 346 or 452s. Never. Not a single narry bit. The best would be the 452 because if the seats are in grindable condition, they are already hardened. with everything equal, they all flow the same. You'll get yahoos sayin "but the 915s are better, blah, blah, blah...", but the FACT is that your butt dyno will never know the difference. In fact, the 452s beat out the 915s in several peaks on the RPM graph. But the differences are all so slight, that you can say they all flow the SAME.
 
get some 915s like everyone says or some 906 heads.i'm running 906 heads with some done with bigger valves and dual springs.

Hey, I'll add my two cents here. And I'm getting to like batting the ball back and forth between you and I. On flow numbers I agree with you, they are all about the same. That said if your looking to up Compression, Most BB have Pistons down in the hole @TDC anywhere from .040 to .090. The 915 is the easiest and cheapest way to up the Static numbers.

That's right on. Also, if you are aware of it, BESIDES the Max Wedge stuff, the '67 big exhaust valve 915 was actually the only real hipo head for the fat motor. Folks think that the 906 is a high performance head and it ain't. It just happened to be used on the Road Runner. All the rest of that motor is what made it high performance....you know....the THREE carbs? LOL the 906 was used on everything from 440 six packs to 383 2 barrel motors. ..and I'm not sayin they suck. Just that there's really nuthin special about um.
 
Some moterhome heads have an extra hole bored in the water jacket to aid in cooling. Maybe that would benefit you.

Right on. Don't see that too often. Most people will sit and argue head numbers all day. I'll agree that I would look for 452's first, because of the valve seats, as you said. mopardrt, are you keeping the same pistons in the engine? That will factor in on whether you look for open or closed chambers.
 
Yall know what??? I musta been on DRUGS when I made that post up there. Everywhere I said "915" I meant "906". Damn. If I had a brain, I'd take it out and play with it.
 
I have 902 heads on my 383. It's a daily driver and they work just fine.

The 902 heads, I believe, are some of the latest types, with hardened valve seats, and I think that they came out in 1974 or so..

Mine were worked over a bit, (ported, flowed, etc..)

I've got a 452 on one side and a 346 on the other! Doesn't matter, the flow is within 1 percent.

So you go back to a 7 year old thread. Take the time to "disagree"with me. but don't bother to post why? Well I'll just add that I disagree with your disagree!
