Last Saturday I had my 68 Barracuda fastback sitting in the driveway so I could do some cleaning in the garage. It was a hot sunny day and I had all the windows rolled up. After about 4 hours I heard a loud bang that sounded like a gun shot. Went out to the driveway and found the quarter window shattered. No visible signs of impact and it was still intact until I touched it. Then class all over to clean up. Problem, what is the best way to replace it. I have a service manual and it seems to be of little help. Did a search on the site and inter-web and did not find much.
Pulled off the soft panel and could easily get at the forward bolt, but the rear one I can not get at. Any tips or tricks would be a big help.

That is very odd.
That tempered glass is hard to break.
I've never done that car.
Sorry can't help on the specifics.
I thought the same thing.
I did find in the service manual procedure to replace it, but requires removing the "garnish molding per the service manual and what I call the interior metal trim. Have to figure out the sequence for removing it with damaging it.

Anyone removed the garnish molding/trim panels on a 68 fastback? Looking for guidance/starting point.

The piece I need to remove is the trim panel with the dome light in it. I assume that there are screws under the chrome strip and that is where I have a problem. It only has one screw at the end near the trunk. How is the rest held in and how do I remove it without damage. I am sure that is a hard part to get.

To remove it you have to pull the stainless trim on the wheel housing as well there are screws under it that attach the trim panel. There is also a hidden screw on the front edge at the door. Seems if you roll the window down You maybe able to access the 2 bolts that attach the glass after lifting the vapor barrier. I completely disassembled my 69 so I am not sure if you can do it with the trim panel installed or not. Do you have the service manual? It is available @ myMopar.net.

Be carefull with the opera lamp as well, the pink is always hot so you want to disconnect the battery! If you can access the window bolts after rolling down, you can pull the seal at the front to help slip the the glass in at an angle and maybe save you from pulling the trim panel. Never tried it but might worth a look.

Yes I have the service manual and it shows replacing the window with the trim panel removed. There are 2 holes to access the bolts easily with it rolled about 3/4 up. With rolled all the way down, I can access the forward bolt easily, but not the rear one. Can get a boxed offset wrench on it, but not much room to move it. Even if I can it loose and off, reinstalling it would be extremely difficult as there is no room to get your hand in there to start the bolt.
You mentioned pulling the stainless trim, how is that held in place? Clips? When I remove the screw at the rear and work forward do I just carefully pop it out?

This is an absolutely horrible job and I'm a collision tech that does this stuff for a living.

My guess is that your regulator was slightly bent and pushing on the glass and that's what caused it to explode.

I had the same problem on my 68 Barracuda, minus the broken glass. I can't stress enough that taking out the regulator is a complete pain in the ***, but it does come out once you get everything in the right position.

Putting it back in is just as hard.

I suggest a half case of beer and a pack of cigarettes.

Because even if you don't drink or smoke, you will by the time you are done.

I replaced the regulator on my 69, unbolted the window and completely removed it for cleaning. You can finagle the rear bolt in the up and down positions, not easy. I wear an XL glove size and i got in and out with a lot of patience. Considered taking the garnish off but that could lead to other issues so I decided to go the blood sweat and tears method of shoving my hand up there with a open end wrench. One of my wrenches is still in the fender. Not worth ripping the car apart to get it, whats one more rattle.

Well, I finally got the rear window bolt out yesterday after about 2 hours. I welded a 1/2 drive 7/16 socket on to 14 inches long of 1/4 inch flat bar. Loosened it 1/4 turn on each bite. Breaker bar would not work, not enough room. Everything cleaned up and lubed. Waiting for new window to arrive and then the fun of putting that rear bolt back in and making sure everything is level and straight.

lol, I told you it wasn't a fun job.

Even from a bare shell it is a 12 pack! After that go get another 12 and ask why!
