So, I installed an 8.25 in my Dart....it has an unknown pedigree. When I put in the carrier, I had to use early style bearings, so I figured it to be an early (mid 75 back) rear. What year did the BBP 8.25 start showing up in A bodies? What else could they be in that would fit an a-body?

The reason for the query is my unfortunate experience buying brake parts....it had 11" drums, so I assumed 11 x 2.5, and ordered accordingly. BUT when I pulled it down, they are 11 x 2s. I tried putting the shoes on, and they fit but I could not install the top return springs....what could the backing plates be from? And when did 11 x 2s show up (if ever) on these cars?

11x2's were an early B and C-body brake set up. They didn't come on any A-bodies, and they were replaced by the 11x2.5's around '70 or so.

Also, you can only use 11x2" parts on them. The backing plates are different. The BBP axle offset was the same for all BBP axles, so the backing plates have different offsets for the 11x2, 11x2.5, and 11x3" rear brakes.

All of the above is correct, of course it doesn't explain why You have a set of 11x2" backing plates on an 8.25" rear, which never happened from the factory. Someone
may have swapped up to them because it's what they had laying around, and replaced the OE 10x2.5" units with them..........really the only explanation I can think of.
72bluNblu's sticky in the drivetrain forum has the dimensions, is this an A-body rear? When I swapped an 8.75 from a '69RR into The ex-PoPo Dippy, I pulled the axles
& hung the whole brake assy. on each side from the 8.25, then put the 11x2.5's right on the RR rear. Less likely but possible someone slipped that rear into an older B
and did the same w/their brakes...................but the spring pads would be different unless they moved the leaves in.

Gotcha. And they have proportionally higher parts costs as they are far less common...freaking RockAuto only had one 11 x 2 drum in stock. Found it on a listing for a Monaco. At least the shoes were cheap.

My old man's 74 W100 has 11 x 2 brakes. That there drum is outta' reason from Oreilly's, but pretty reasonable from RockAuto....I went with the drum for the Monaco.

The rear end bolted right in.....and measured correctly from perch to perch. I don't know, but it is FOR SURE an 11x2 set up. Wasted some $ and an afternoon finding that out!

Right, everything is made of gold if three people need it! So unless someone offset the springs in to A-body specs for tire clearance & re-used their brakes on an older B, it
was an upgrade, just not the popular one. There shouldn't be a shortage of the popular ones yet though, so a simple backing plate swap..........................

Oh yeah. The old boy I got the rear end from had a 64 Valiant and a 67(?) B body sitting at his shop and a 66 Polara....got one F body and one A body UCA off of him along with rear and f-body spindles. Got a good deal, but he did not know (or remember) what all the parts were. So, between he and his friend that was the "mopar guy" (he was a chevy/motorcycle guy), there is NO telling what was done on this thing or why. I THINK I have it sorted now, though.

The 11" x 2" Brake Shoes and Drums -- were actually NEVER used on any "B" or "E" Body cars!!!!!!!
It was strictly the Light Duty Brake System (Many of them were Canadian!!!) for the 1965 - 1973 "C" Body Cars -- the Dodge Monaco & Polara, and
the Plymouth Fury, Sport Fury, and VIPs, -- again , 1965 - 1973 only....
I actually have some N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ Brake Shoes --- which is the O N L Y thing you ever want to use in this set up !!!!!!!
and the Brake Drums -- but they are pricey..... they are NOT available through "regular channels"...........

Asbestos brake shoes are the only thing that should be used? Yeah ok. That's why they still run mesothelioma commercials on TV, because asbestos brake shoes are a great idea. And if you're not running semi-metallic shoes because they'll wear out the drums faster, well, it's time to park the car. Drums stop the car, preserving the drums means not stopping the car as well. If you're more worried about the drums wearing out than hitting the car in front of you, it's time to park that garage queen for good.

I've pulled 3 sets of 11x2's out of the wrecking yards right here in California, off a Newport, a Monaco, and a definitely not a C-body D100. They weren't special. Seems like the drums were available not all that long ago. Maybe they'll show up again like the 10" SBP drums did when they do another production run, the kind of demand those drums have doesn't warrant year round production. Just intermittent short runs. Or maybe they won't come back and you'll have to upgrade to the more popular 11x2.5's, which are plenty available. Stop better too.

I have new drums from Autozone sitting on the trunk lid of the dart right now, and shoes from RockAuto. I will be putting them on when I get back from hell, um, the DMV, as I try to sort out this title issue on the 64 Valiant I picked up.

Lol. Autozone is a pretty regular channel. :D

I haven't looked for a bit and noticed the drums weren't on rockauto anymore, but that was as far as I went. I had them sourced out before because I have a couple sets of those 11x2's still on 8 3/4's I pulled out of the yards, but I decided I wasn't going to run them on anything I had because I had enough 11x2.5" set ups that I didn't need them.
