radiator hose help

-
I figure I'll post this in this thread...
I'm having similar problems to OP. I have a 383 in a '70 Duster and I just installed a new 26" radiator. The problem is that the lower hose that was on the previous radiator (which was aftermarket but had no stamps or markings to identify the manufacturer) is now leaking while on the new radiator. There are no markings or part numbers on the lower hose either. I don't have any cool parts stores around by me that will let me rummage through their inventory of hoses in hopes of finding a match, so I figured I'd ask you fine folks. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated...and don't worry - I would never even think of putting one of those universal pieces of garbage on my vehicle!

look at a Gates 20558 and see if it has the angle you need. It should be close. When you find the one that will work, do like I do when it comes to parts for your car. Get a notebook and start writing down part #'s for the different parts you put on the car. That way when you need another part, you can thumb through the book and find it. Sure did help me over the years.

Thanks, I'll try that Gates hose. I actually do keep a little "repair journal" with parts numbers and such, my auto school teacher suggested it, and yes it sure does help.

What size is the water pump and inlet?
Is the water pump a bigger diameter than the bottom port on the radiator?

To be honest, I didn't measure it. I know...that was dumb of me, but I was in a hurry to get everything together and get the car out of the driveway so we can get it re-tarred as we are selling the house and want to do some maintenance so it will be easier to sell.
Once I can get back to working on the car, I will take those measurements and if need be, post them here.
Again, I appreciate all of the help!

should be 1 3/4" on the bottom and 1 1/2" on the top.

Did you get the hose you are happy with? The radiator you purchased looks close to the factory style A-body BB inlet.

I believe that the factory 67/69 BB hose will work good for you. Find one based on the Goodyear number I previously posted.

So the radiator is 1/4" larger than the water pump?!

Let me go through this one more time for you. Not sure what you are asking here about the water pump. In #28 you asked if the water pump is a bigger diameter than the bottom port on the radiator. Me personally I have never seen a radiator that has a bigger port on top than the bottom. The water pump size should be the same size as the top port on the radiator as the hose connect to each other. the ID of the top port and the ID of the top hose is 1 1/2". The bottom port of the radiator is 1 3/4" in diameter as does the ID of the bottom hose. At least this is the size of this radiator, this hose and this water pump. I may have an orphan here. Hope this helps.

Great description. I have ordered that Gates hose you suggested, it should be arriving today or tomorrow. I have a feeling that it will work, even if I have to cut it a little bit.

Good deal, more than likely you will have to trim it.

Not sure what setup you’re running (engine and radiator and if either were factory) but I had a hard time finding a new lower hose with a spring. I bought a new hose and then put my old spring in the new hose.

Old thread i know but curious what lower hose are you running?...........

I want to say it's a Mopar 60659. I can't get at it to verify as the car is stored right now. If I remember right I had to trim that one as well.

........then put my old spring in the new hose.

Yeah, don't toss the old coil out. I'm not sure it's really a spring. More like a stiff coil of wire, maybe SS. Probably could roll your own around a tube close to the ID of the hose if needed.

I am running a 440 with what I assume is a factory radiator in a 71 duster, top hose is passenger side and lower hose is drivers side, hoses looked fine they are just 17 years old, figured itd be time for some new rubber, I will check those #s, thank you
