Got an 87 D100 regular cab with a short bed with a good running 72 slant six with a 2 barrel in it. I also have a basically stock with an upgraded cam 58 392 Hemi sitting on the stand. It was rebuilt and assembled maybe 20 years ago waiting for a interesting project to come along. Well, that never happened. Another member and I were discussing the motor today and he suggested maybe pull the slant and use the Hemi in the truck. I do have an early Hemi to 727 adapter and if I did this, I'd like to use a 518 to get a bit better mileage than the 8/9 I'd expect out of the Hemi. So, here's the question and the poll:

I am torn. I really like slants, but the 392 would be cool in there. I have to go with the 392 install.

fits well . just costly headers . but my bud put some shorty's from ebay for cheap . tell you if they fit , thats a good way to go . that motor is a torque monster . hang some tall gears in the r/e . but thats a lot of iron on the noise for steering around , if its blown then to the track you go . blown or turbo'd those motors rock n roll . i'm a blown guy myself , lol .

Would that be a first?

Dunno about that but on the Sweptline site, there's a section on dropping a Gen I 392 into a 61 or so up through a 71 D series truck. I know the basic truck didn't change underneath from 72 through about 93 or so.

too new of a truck for an early hemi for my taste..

i'd love an early hemi in my 65 D100 though..:)

I sort of tend to agree - the 87 would be awesome with a big block or Gen III Hemi in it . . . . but one has to work with what they have. An early Hemi look right at home in a 40s, 50s or 60s truck, maybe even in a full size up through about 61 or so.

You got both why not, got to be a fairly easy swap. And Later down the road if you find something else you want to drop the hemi you can always yank it.

Where is option 5: buy a Desoto and drop the hemi in?

Yea, I should have added a 5th option - use the truck as is and wait for the right project to come along - or something to that effect!

Sounds like option 5 has been the go to option for 2 decades

option 5 . desotos came with hemis in them , not chysler hemis . but desoto hemis . some of which have been in the recorder books for years now , and are still a part of racing today . salt guys like them . but i think run what ya brung works . and have that ones wrecked , the engine will live on in another chassi , lol . i've got motors that out last the chassi don't you , lol . this ones on it third chassi . it wrecked the others , lol . but it just a wedge .

I need to add to this old thread - a suitable project has come along! I bought a 47 Dodge and one of the motor options I'm considering and researching is using my 392 in the 47!

I have seen the 392 in a 86 I think it was d 150 and it ran great...............................................Jeff

Option 6, sell it to me on the cheap, u won`t have to mess w/ it !

I won't have to worry about putting in the truck or anything else for that matter - sold it to a guy who had to have it. I probably wasn't going to use it anyway since it's been sitting on the stand for at least 25 years!
