Gripe: "Restoration." Yea right.

-
I thought "restoration" was that magic place where imaginary cars go to never be driven again.

"Cool car. I have a 1956 Hemi Cuda."
"1956? That's weird. Where is it?"
"Ummmm it's in restoration"
"Suurreeeeee"

Well the first thing I obviously have to say is- restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration restoration and I can say it all I want to anytime I want to! LMAO !!!
I've restored every part of my car, but my car is not restored LOL!!!

Im not sure why this even needs a thread, people use words wrong all the time, whats it matter at the end of the day? i mean where does the frustration for you stop?? i mean technically speaking if you repaint your car you are no longer restoring the paint you are replacing the paint and im sure there are many "restored" cars that use not factory correct paint on restored cars....and why would they? modern day paint is light years beyond the lacquers and enamels from the 60-80's. splitting hairs if you ask me........

R.I.O. = Restoration Is Over-rated.

Resurrection is the only term I use. I believe we are resurrecting these cars for the most part. Restoration is for cars that end up in somebody's garage or warehouse never to be driven or seen. They can have it. I'm a driver kind of guy.
:steering:
I'm with you on this, exactly why I titled my build thread the way I did Resurecting Mom's Duster I just wish I had finished High School then I might not have spelled resurrection wrong!

Another term that sometimes gets to me is "NOS" when it's clear that it's a knock off Chinese piece of crap or that the original box is long gone and the part looks used. Maybe the letters should be changed to CNOS or SUNOS (slightly used new old stock).

just try talking to one of em, you'll find out
(or watch that silly fast and furry movie)

Holy freggin post Batman!

Never thought I would see this much energy outside of a Democratic team trying to destroy a president...LOL!

I am glad you all have opinions and are also tired of different words- it just shows I'm not going crazy..... or if I am... I've got a lot of people seeing cookoo birds as well!

Now: how has Barrett- Jackson ruined the hobby in your eyes?

"Restored" to return to original condition. If it originally had wheel discs then put wheel discs back on it? If the engine bay was originally painted orange then paint the engine bay orange!
"Survivor" is a TV show
No Mopar ever had a Pawsey (Posi) rear axle!
The term i like the most is "Easy Restoration" Give me a break, the only easy one is the one you pay someone else to do!

I always think of the word "rebuild". ma mopar built my car in 1971. other people before me rebuilt parts of it, I am rebuilding most of it now. restore?? not what I call restore. just fixing what doesn't work and get to driving it. its just a darn car!!!
BJ has never done me an favors. not the idiots prices in CL .

With me it is the cars being sold as a "Survivor"

A.K.A " I'm too f***ing lazy, cheap and/or stupid to fix anything on this car"

To restore something is to bring it back to a former condition. To retore as new would be to bring it back to the way it left the factory. Most real restorations are over restored as we all know the quality was hit or miss on these old cars even when they were new.
The only correct restoration would be a 100 point concours car. I agree, the term is overused and improperly used.
As for my cars....im just fixing her up and making improvements along the way.

I try to explain my work on my cars as making them " dependable drivers that look to suit me"....

I have in decades past restored " the desirable" cars to perfection, only to have some potential buyer look it over for hours, drive it, and then tell me it just doesn't suit him, but could not tell me why!??? ha
wish I still had that lime AAR 4 speed car he turned down for $10,000 in the early 90's!! ha

Highly restored cars are nice but usually overdone.. . I love true survivors! Even if they have flaws. They smell different.
My brother had a 70 GTO Judge Ram Air IV 4 sp with 40k and it was incredible! I drove it all over Mpls and felt like I was back in 1970 ! A friend had a 70 Hemi Cuda with 60k and I got to drive that for a day. AWESOME!

A nice AAR 4sp was a STEAL for 10k in
1990 !
The meeting of 2 fools....lol
Sorry just couldnt resist...

Barrett Jackson is fantastic! How about the term amateur restoration. In other words, not a perfect resto. There are different levels of restoration

hard to say how well a guys' car is restored because no two were identical.the amount of overspray, black out, undercoating and assembly details were dependant on the guys on the assembly line doing the work.paint markers for procedures could have been any paint that was available that day etc.
the only real way is to take a car like Dave Walden does.He starts with a very high quality original car and takes hundreds of pictures before dis assembly so he can re- create it perfectly...down to the paint drips in the engine bay and orange peel on the paint...oh my!

Call it what ever you want, I have fixed, replaced, rebuilt and modified almost every part of my Dart all that is left is some interior work and fixing bad body work and new paint. Restored, Restomod or fixed and rebuilt doesen't really matter to me.
