So the previous owner decided to put an after market steering wheel on the car. In his great wisdom he decided not to wire the horn to the steering wheel, but instead to a button on the dash.

I am planning on buying an original steering wheel and wiring the horn back to where it is supposed to be. I have a few questions regarding this.

1. What wire should I buy for this? I asked a few people, and they told me wire was wire and it shouldn't matter. Maybe, but I don't believe this. What would you suggest?

2. Is there an easy way to get the wire back through the steering column? I was going to take the steering wheel off, and try to thread the wire back down, which may or may not work. I have a feeling the suggestion will be to drop the steering column and do it that way, which I have no idea how to do.

3. What would be the best way to patch the hole that was drilled into the dash to install this silly horn button? While this will never be a show car, I would like it to look as nice as possible.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

I feel your pain, I picked up a 71 swinger with the same horn button on the dash in the same area. what I did was weld 1 of the small screw holes and I found a flasher switch from a prev year dart and it covered the area, looks stock and the switch can be used for what ever you want.

This is a much better idea than just patching the holes.

Thanks!

Have you traced the wires for the horn yet???

the previous owner may not have hacked them too badly...

Get the wiring diagram and trace the horn wires... Free service manuals download here and wiring diagrams are in the back of chapeter 8:

MyMopar - Mopar Forums & Information - Service Manuals

We just rewired a 71 Valiant, it's not too difficult to follow the horn wiring...

Check it at the bulkhead in the engine compartment and see if it still has wires to the horn... If not, can you splice into the proper bulkhead connector and run a new wires the horns in the engine compartment...

Then there are two multi connectors just under the dash for the steering column... The horn wiring goes through one of them... Most likely the wires from the wiring connector in the steering column have not been touched, check for continuity between the mating connector and the bulkhead connector under the dash in the firewall that goes to the engine compartment...

So once you get the path verified from the bulkhead back in the interior side, then the engine compartment bulkhead forward, you should be good to go...

As far as what wires, I try to match the factory color myself and go one step larger in gauge just for to make it a little better... The wiring diagram tells you what gauge it is... Usually those are 18 gauge, I usually go with 16 gauge... And if I remember correctly, they are green...

the horn relay is behind the drivers kick panel. start there to trace the wire up the column.

Unless the previous owner gutted out the turn switch and other wiring, the wire is likely still there. As KK said, MyMopar is your friend. You need a factory shop manual and the aftermarket wiring diagrams from that site. Horn wire is small, black, about no18 I would guess all it does is trigger the relay

Thanks for the info!

I will try and trace everything out and see if I can get it working.
