I've come across an older Crane HI-6N ignition in kit form, with the LX92 coil, cables, mounting feet etc, new in box, on deep clearance (about $200) it's www.onedirt.com/news/new-products/crave-adds-more-features-to-hi-6n-oval-track-ignition an ignition originally for NASCAR cup use, V8 only, analog w/rev limiter. No other bells or whistles, but looking at the critical spec's it looks like it would be usable in a hot street/strip application, anyone have experience with the Crane HI ignitions, particularly the HI-6N? www.twperformanceparts.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=5272.

Looking at the specs, it looks like much better CDI unit than MSD.

Depends on how you plan to use. Limited race use might be ok, if you plan lots of miles, an inductive ignition is much more reliable. The discharge capacitor could be replaced, but sounds circuit is potted in silicone.

Using with EFI, may troublesome due to electrical noise issues. The multi-spark will make coil (-) drive tach wrong. If the unit has tach output that would be an advantage, otherwise a converter is necessary. Best to drive tach from converter that conditions distributor signal.

I looked into the Crane HI-6 systems as well. I haven't purchased anything yet. My understanding is that they very common in the circle track world. Potted electronics, supposedly very durable. They are now sold by FAST (Fuel Air Spark Technology). Looks like the same box, same part numbers.

Here's a wiring schematic, pretty straight forward hook-up it appears. One wire to tach. No EFI in my case. The simplicity of the unit is what caught my eye, and looking into it more it only works on a V8, uses a specific connector, is potted, is analog vs digital, has a removable plate for inspection so is sealed via dielectric grease so definitely needs mounted in the interior, just the basics it seems, all this not the norm compared to others packed with features, but I like the simplicity and that (from what I've read) it is made in USA which is main reason I'm looking, and the price. Seems an f-ing steal.

I couldn't resist and ended up buying it. Sucks it'll be months before everything is done to know how it'll perform, but for $200 shipped **** it! A roll of the dice. Pretty complete kit: coil w/heavy aluminum finned mount bracket and hardware. The control unit with rubber mounts, bottom plate has a rivet so it swivels open, extensive hardware kit with quality terminals, etc, and the harness with a shielded distributor cable w/sealed connection plugs. The hardware kit seems high quality vs the chintzy **** you typically get. Even comes with a little brass tool to adjust the rpm limiter dials. Unit is made in USA, E-core coil (very similar looking to MSD) made in China. Seller has another one listed with a make offer, here's the link: m.ebay.com/itm/Crane-Cams-Ignition-Coil-Kit-6000-6430-HI-6N-LX92-For-Nascar-Use-Only-/302410427696?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIM.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202348%2526meid%253D7b3a0a8ba7594e128e42acdd933bbcc7%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D2%2526rkt%253D2%2526sd%253D302403061096&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460and some pics of all it comes with

Did you ever find out if it was made by Daytona sensor?

Also, you say the kit is pretty complete. What's missing?

Just heard back from someone at Daytona Sensors who said they didn't make this version. Kit has no circuit board schematic and it's missing the nuts and maybe washers for the rubber feet mounts, all minor. Complete otherwise

Thanks. So evidently Daytona sensors did make a version of that.

I may have to see if that other one is still for sale.

Worth a shot, might be able to get it for even less, kit was well over $500+ new from old listings I've seen. Took 5 business days for me to get it, no signs of ever having been installed or even temporarily hooked up. Box and contents we're clean and hardware bag sealed. Go for it!!
