gents,

65 valiant, column shifting auto 225. i rebuilt and reinstalled my steering column and my gear selector is now 1 gear off. based on my gear indicator: 1st is actually second, second is actually drive, drive is actually neutral, neutral is actually reverse, reverse and park both are actually park. and i am unable to shift all the way down into 1st as it bottoms out at 2nd. i've shifted the ribbed plate thing to either end of it's adjustment and it doesn't change a thing. when i pulled the column i just disconnected the 2 shifter cables, then when i reinstalled i reconnected them. so in theory the only thing that changed position is the ribbed selector plate(circled in the image below). any ideas what i did wrong? what could have changed? could it be that i switched the cables around?

thanks in advance

OK , let me give it a try . First , a helper will be benefit you but not necessary . 1. Disconnect linkage from trans at trans lever . 2. manually put trans in "park" at the trans lever . 3. place column shifter in "park" . 4. adjust linkage so the adjustment just slips into the trans lever . 5. remove adjustment arm from trans lever and manually place trans arm in low (1st). 6. move column shift to low (1st). 7. adjustment lever on trans should just slip in . 8. if not , try 1/2 way and recheck by putting both column and trans in park . 9. MAKE SURE that you cannot start car except in (park or neutral) . Not a hard job just time consuming . Ask me how I know . Good luck , Tom

Would this adjustment apply to a 1974-75 dodge dart sport too? My car sometimes only starts in nuetral. Or occasionally in park it's hit or miss.

I chimed in on a seven year old conversation of theirs. I think your issue could be a faulty neutral safety switch. I was in diapers
