....on Saturday. Was Summit Series #7. The announcer, think his name is OG, was rambling about the 56 Chevy. New driver new car. First attempted launch think he just matted the throttle and side stepped the third pedal. Wheel spin/hopped. Didn't let out. Next time pass just a repeat of the first. Couldn't help but think this is how sh:t breaks. Third time out it happened..

Wheel hop & spacer on the end of the axle....damn shame whoever spent all that $$ on the car couldn't just get the right length rear housing built...

You never know what you're going to see with first-time racers.
A few years ago our club, Inland Mopars Car Club, was working a NMCA event at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.
A nice-looking Chevelle came out of the staging lanes and you could tell the driver didn't have a clue as to how to line up for the stage lights. After some instruction and a bit of a waiting ordeal he finally got it staged. The lights came down and after admiring the pretty shade of green on the last bulb for a few seconds he finally mashed the throttle and took off down the track.
The Chevelle ran in the mid-13s and, as we were watching, we kept waiting to see brake lights...and waiting...and waiting...and waiting...
Finally, we saw brake lights just before he hit the sandbox in a cloud of dust.
Granted, Pomona is known for having a comparatively short shut-off area but Top Fuel and Funny Car manage to get slowed down and turned off the track before going into the 'kitty litter' unless they have a chute/brake issue. How this clown managed to drive past all the turnoff roads is still a mystery.
When he came out again to make another pass about an hour later he was still dropping sand and gravel out of the bottom of the Chevelle all the way from the staging lanes to the bleach box.
Let's just say he didn't make any friends among the starting line crew....

There is always the first time, I remember mine and it was at Spokane Raceway in 1979.

I can remember mine - somewhere there are pictures my sister took at the old Fremont Raceway

My dad was riding shotgun coaching me through everything as I lined up - "remember don't look at the other car, watch the lights, see green mash the pedal and for godsakes keep it straight" Won my 1st legal drag race. thanks dad

And yes, my sister was in shotgun for the second run

ya gotta love it! any one can drag race, takes no skill !! looks like this guy had none, !!!!!

I remember my first time on the track too - Orange County International Raceway 47 years ago.
Early 1970 with my '69 340 Swinger. I didn't get much sleep the night before because I was so excited about my first trip down the track. OCIR even had helmet rentals available for first-timers like me.
I don't remember all the details but it sure was fun because I've been hooked ever since.
I can't wait to get my current '69 Dart build finished and hit the strip again.

Last guy I went down the track with.
It was his first time.
Glad I was ahead of him!! He wrecked the guardrail in MY lane! (Right lane)
