Hi guys! I have a '73 Swinger that I picked up for a song. It's a ratty hoopty for sure, but it was something I could afford. It was originally a slant six car, yanked that and sold it the same day.

Swapped in a $100 junky SBE 318/904 and a 3.23 8 3/4 and ran it N/A for a year, which was great fun.

Slammed a cage and homemade subframe connectors in it.

Built a homemade turbo kit from trash and slammed a cheap turbo and air to water intercooler on it. Even more fun. Ran it on 10ish psi and it would burn the 295 street tires down from like 30 mph.

But something happened, had some detonation. It kicked the head gasket, melted a piston a little and rattled the bearings out of it. I may have botched the tuneup, or the MSD may have not pulled the timing it was supposed to, don't really know.

Either way, I was at a crossroads. Rebuild my junk or upgrade to new junk? Well stupid question, upgrade of course! So I snagged this 130k mile aluminum headed small block with good native fuel injection and a great flowing intake for $550.

And a really strong overdrive automatic with lockup for $150.

Initial test fit.

Made some mounts from gas pipe and steel plate.

Snagged a billet 78/75 and a big honkin' air to air intercooler on the cheap.

So now I'm just waiting for some up and forward turbo headers to arrive so I can start hotside fabrication. My goal is to go low 10's, maybe high 9's and still cruise to work and drive it on the highway. Feel free to follow along and let the butthurt flow as I go fast on the cheap in a car that will start easily, get decent mileage, and cruise at 85 without screaming at 3800rpm! :)

Forgot to add, this is what it looked like in my daily driver setup:

And when it's time to get serious:

And a little of the work it did (from a 20 roll, haha)

Here's a little low quality vid of me goofing around on like 4-5psi.

And more goofing around on 4 psi. Didnt build boost on the 2 step in this vid cause I think I had it set too low. Dig the turbo whistle on the way back by though! :D

"Let the butthurt flow".......ya gotta love it.

That's great man! This is what it's all about. You got some mad junker skills! lol Good job!

And the brakes/suspension.....all original hahaha!
I swapped to the OE front discs, rebuilt the front end with decent Moog parts. Rear brakes are big ones off the '67 Newport that the 8 3/4 came out of. Did the modern master cylinder swap. Front and rear springs are original slant 6 items, going to put Cal-Tracs and their shocks on the back. But honestly, it doesn't drive too bad for being old junk! :)

How much boost killed the 318?
It was on 10 psi when it died. I don't think it was the boost that killed it though. When I had the issue, it broke up real hard under power and popped out the exhaust pretty bad. Pretty sure it was a tuneup problem though. When I got home it was pissing coolant out the side of the motor between the head and the block.

Yeah, i'd agree that the tuning didn't help, especially if the piston was that chewed up. It was more of a curiosity question of how much boost the teener handled for a "period of time" lol i followed another thread on here where someone was eyeing an ebay turbo setup and was thinking it'd live through 8-10 psi with good tuning on an efi setup. apparently there's some validity to that. cool thanks!

Yeah, I have no doubt it'd live at 10+ psi if it's in decent shape and tuned well.

That is Bad *** man I wish I had your junker skills.
Thanks man! It's just nuts, bolts, and mig wire. :)

Sweet build! Loving it man.

What part of Chicagoland are you in? Naperville here.
Thanks! :) I'm in Elwood near the Route 66 dragstrip, but originally from Lisle. :)
