I have a 1968 Barracuda Conv. with a 318 auto. I've read many threads that waffle back and forth about '68 block having a VIN # and how to assure you have the original block. This car has been in the family since the early 70's and my uncle was the second owner. I know the lower end was rebuilt 10 years ago. The numbers on the drivers side under the head doesn't match my VIN# but the block cast date of 09/26/67 does work. What does you guys think? Is this the original motor?

the numbers under the head on the block that you show come from the engine assembly plant. First digit would represent model year, second digit is engine plant, then engine size, P for premium full or R for regular (performance engines were P), then next 4 digits correspond to the date using a 10,000 date calendar and the last 4 are the number of the engine produced. the VIN would be on the passenger side oil pan rail, just below the water jacket plug

That looks like block serial number on top pic, in 68 Vin stamping started roughly half way through the year and I believe only HP engines were stamped. And 68's were stamped behind driver side head on trans bellhousing rail if it were stamped. Your serial number reads:

PM=engine assembly plant Mound Road
318= displacement
R=regular fuel
2265 using mopar 10,000 day calendar is Tuesday, October 10, 1967
0419=engine sequence assembly number

The engines received a serial number when the final build was complete.

The partial VIN was stamped right before the engine & transmission were bolted into the car.

Thanks for your replies. My date code works for being the original motor but it has no VIN # anywhere on the block. This must be one of the pre-VIN stamped motors.
