Does any body know to the smart way to remove this.

use a wide putty knife ,there is 2 post that push back in the metal, at least on a 71 that was how they are on, pry at the top between metal and plastic , each post is about 1 to 1 1/2 inch from end of emblem

Yup. Putty knife or one of those fancy trim remover deals. Go slow, and go back and forth between the two posts. Don't try to pry one side out and then do the other, work the whole thing out.

This is what you're working against, metal barrel nut on a plastic peg. One at each end.
