NEED TO TALK

-
Kind of but not really relevant. Just reclaimed my 76 dart and a 74 duster for parts. Dart is really rough but duster is better. I want to sacrifice the duster to resurrect the dart. Figured my best friend would talk me out of it, but instead he is encouraging me to move forward.

Guys have been modifying mint cars/barn finds since forever. So it is yours and in the end you have to live with the decision. Or build it so it can be undone as others mentioned.

If it was mine, I'd have a small block going into it. But it's not mine. So do what YOU want.

So if I keep the slant ....what can I expect to get for extra hp with basic modifications Headers ? Dual carb ?
Also does anyone have CCR or LED ZEP 8 tracks they want to part with ?
Thanks

Unless your turbo it your wasting your time and money. You'd be lucky to make it as fast as a stock 318. /6 head holds you back. They just flow terrible. Fully built $$$$$ /6 makes the same hp as a stock magnum but needing a lot more gear stall and not very streetable.

Google "Steve Magnante,Car Craft slant six..." Car Craft had a slant six turbo build that made big power..Bring a big checkbook....."

Not bad for a /6 better than dead stock the least you can do to make them a little more enjoyable. But their comparing net and gross power numbers.

And secondly leaving out gearing which is the main problem with small displacement.
232 lbs-ft vs 318/340 Stock 340 lbs-ft

340 x 3.23 = 1098 lbs-ft to the tires
232 x 4.73= 1098 lbs-ft to the tires

You need 1.5 more gear than a 177 hp 318 to equal out.

One thing I like about that build is should all these carb worries that the bottom end torque kept going up every time.
Air flow builds torque (hp) obviously there's limits.

you will get different opinions from different people.truth is it is your car do with it as you please........I have 73 duster with /6 three speed in floor,no p/s,no p/b, but has factory a/c.I am the 3rd owner and it will stay that way (for a while)it is a blast to drive with the 3 speed...............................................and cold a/c................................................Jeff

"GREEN" with envy ....original owner put a lot of thought into that purchase.

@F/A Tech - it be your car... do what you want. JM2C though - someone said if you had wanted a V8 car, you should have bought a V8 car.. I whole heartedly agree.

Nice car- split the difference- go 318. It would had been a factory engine and still has power AND gas economy.

Very nice car!
Good luck and even though I know I will cause some serious flack with this statement... a Slant 6 no matter how much you do to it, is still a Slant 6.
Until somebody builds a better cylinder head for a /6 they have their limitations.

are you sure that the mill is a 198? Look at the fender tag, at the bottom row of numbers. The 225 was an E24, not sure what a 198 was...Maybe an E21?

I have been a fan of starting out with a V-8 car from the start. I realize these days that those cars may be difficult to come by, so if you want to swap it over to a 340, I say go for it. It depends on what you are going for, if you want v-8 power and torque and the sound (which is hard to beat with a 6 cylineder, it just isn't the same even with modern 6 cylinders) I say do it. Besides, setting the car up for more power/handling etc. is what hot rodding is about.

If you plan as swapping it as others are saying dont go the same lame 340 swap. Go with a modern driveline. That is how hot rodding really started. In the beginning it was a nailhead or Caddy motor swap for the power. The newer drivelines stock have way more horse than the old motors. Hell even a modern V6 has as much horse as a 340 both being in stock form.
