Question for anyone racing with a 4 speed manual trans. What rear tire are you running? I mean brand and compound. Also. What size tire with what rear gear?
I'm looking to buy some new tires and wouldn't mind some feedback.
My setup consists of SS springs in stock location, Rancho 9 way adjustables, 3.91SG in a 8.75 rear, A833 with Hays street/strip clutch shifted with a Hurst V-gate.
I know I'm light on rear gearing, but this car sees equal time on street and strip. I have two sets of wheels to swap back and forth. What tire would you recommend for the strip?

I just run an M&H DOT tire. It's not a radial. That way I don't have to swap wheels all the time. When you get to be my age, work is a 4 letter word.

4 speed, 4.56 gear, Cale Aronson BB/Long adjustable soft lock clutch.

Car went almost 110 MPH with slapped bars and a worn out 340. At 1000 feet it ran out of cam and just motored. The car should go 11's now. I just haven't had time to even drive it let alone make some passes on it.

the MT 29.5 x9x15 slick works great. it's made for stick shift , M5 compound. 3056st is number. requires very short burnouts. we don't even get smoke off them. can dead hook with them. with 5.38 gear 6200 launch. like anything else, depends on how your car launches.

Gentleman, thank you for the replies. Tires are just like everything else these days- too damn many choices. I've been eyeballing these lately Hoosier Racing Tires Drag Tire 29.0/10 R15 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00975FLSA/?tag=joeychgo-20.
Also these, Nitto (Series NT 555R DRAG) 275-60-15 Radial Tire https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013J8Q9IG/?tag=joeychgo-20. My thoughts about the Nittos are like YR stated, no swapping back and forth but I'm not sure they'd hook Thoughts?

I hear a lot of complaints about the Nittos but have never tried them. I know some guys are saying prices have went up so now they are priced close to MT and Hoosier.

I'd pay attention to what perfacar said. He doesn't say much, but when he does its golden. He's very sharp and doesn't BS.
IMO, your battle will be with the stick and a radial. I've never done it, and I'm too dam old to have to tune, as I have at least a handle on what I have. If perfacar says that tire is good with a stick, it's because he has used it and it worked.
Not many stick guys left anymore. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

YR- completely agree. I'm afraid the radial will not take the hit of a stick car. I think deep down I already know that I should go with the bias slick and just do the rim swap rodeo on track weekends. I'll probably go with a 28x10x15 or 28x9x15. Shorter tire should make up a little bit for the 3.91 rear gear.
You're right about one thing, there aren't too many guys still rowing the gears anymore.

we have found, radials don't work well on stick cars. it beats the sidewalls up. on automatic cars they are faster, also, are sensitive to track conditions,. in other words can spin. a bias ply tire for stick has harder compound. softer compounds spin on the hit. there's a reason, they have stick only tires!!

Thanks, good info there.

---------------HOOSIER!------------------
Spoken from experience or do you just like them better? I didn't think there'd be any difference between brands. Between compounds yes, but brands? Figured it was like Nike or Reebok, just about the name.

Ask perfacar if he's ever tested the Hoosier. He has years doing this so he can probably help you out and not spend more than you need to.

Some brands may indeed be better. Most minor differences exist and have an effect even with the same compound.

Perfacar - do you run tubes and rim screws in your tires? Also, why do you run such a narrow tire?

with mt, have to run screws with tubes. in stock eliminator 9" tire is all you can run. as for that size of tire, the AAa/AA cars, new cobra jets and mopars all use 9 x 30 x15 tires, they can run in the 8 sec zone. like I said, depends on suspension and how good your car hooks. I've tried hoosiers, found them to be too soft. spun on the hit, couldn't recover. another good stick tire is phoenix 9x30 F 14 compound tire, made for stick cars.

There you go SSG. Straight from the racers mouth. A guy who competitively runs a stick car. Your best bet is to go with his recommendation. It makes the learning curve much less steep.

BTW, did you ever say what clutch you have?

it's top secret, lol. only for stockers, lol. start on edge of water, set line lock, at 6000 rpm, let clutch out and line lock same time. car comes out , bout 10, ft, tires are dry. stage car, as soon as the other guys lights his bottom bulb, I mat the throttle to 6100 RPM on two step, last yellow, comes on, let clutch out, car will pull wheels bout 2 ft in the air, shift at the tree @6500 RPM, simple as pie, lol.

From my experience, all the way back to the old hemi days w/ marginal tires. Even had a pair of 16 x32.5`s on the hemi at one time. Did`t have good luck w/ a new pair of m-h-early 2000`s either . mickey Thompson were good, hoosiers held air perfectly, and dead hooked on a 600 horse 406 sbc pick up. I have m-t drag radial s on my 505" fish, w/ caltracs, no dragstrip as of yet, but don`t think they`ll ever hold it !----------so far. If I were going to buy new slicks, it would be the biggest thing I could get on the car, and be Hoosiers. JMO

What was wrong with the M&H tires that didn't work. I was using their 14x32 tires in the era and I loved them. Had a nice tune up window, would hook in a car wash and were .03-.04 quicker than the Goodyears that I replaced.
