Anyone else check out the new discovery show with Gas monkey Richard Rawlings? I have watched the new episodes, most recent last night's episode. I like the idea of helping struggling businesses, just not sure if I like the guy Russell the muscles personality. Even if he is right with what he is saying. I mean these guys I know are asking for the help, but it seems like a lot to swallow when they tell them you have one day to get your crap out, the rest goes to recycle or landfill. I don't know, but I'm sure I will keep watching to see how it goes. The guy last night they helped seems doomed to fail. I think he is not wrapped tight mentally or is maybe a struggling alcholic. Richard did say the guy can't keep track of how many beers a day he's had. Rawlings is a self admitted big drinker, but does seem to have his **** together. Anyone else watching this? Thoughts?

Keep in mind it's tv and the issues you brought up may or may not have been fabricated for added "dramatic effect."

And if a shop can't stay in business these days it because of inexperience, crap work or mismanagement.
Like the shops that charged guys for this kind of work.:D
That last pic is supposed to be an X pipe, and this is what the owner found when he got the car home.

Very true. I was feeling bad for the wife. It would be very hard for me to hear someone right, wrong or otherwise tell my spouse to shut their mouth and listen. Lol, I know I've wanted to tell my spouse to stop yapping, but I know better than that. Haha. I hope they have follow up episodes to let us know who made the most of the help or who failed still despite the help. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for the guy last night. Well, all of them really, but for sure him.

Omg! I am stunned by those pictures. Can't believe those are done by a shop that someone was paid to do. The exhaust shop we use put in an x pipe on my sons 68 Fury-III and was flawless. Though he makes you walk through the process before he starts the job, then keeps the car up on the lift when you go to pick it up. He makes sure you see exactly what you just paid for and the quality you are getting. Plus, only uses american made parts, and only the best of those. Plus his labor is usually half all the others and has a 5 star rating from 100+ reviews. He has done 2 cars back to back for me, and will be the one to do the exhaust on our big block duster project.

I have been in the auto business, and Richard Rawlings to me seems like a guy who is just fixated on the $$$. As a mechanic who cares about cars and people you can't just push crap out the door because of money and deadlines. Rawlings seems like he doesn't understand that and would turn out crap to make his bottom line. He seems like a person who has no qualms about either knowingly or unknowingly ripping people off.

Watch Gas Monkey over the years some----NO MORE! I don't like the guy. My wife was watching with me one night and Rawlins primped himself in the rearview mirror on camera, I thought my bride was going to have a stroke.
I have been watching Iron Resurrection, didn't like it at first but I really like it now. They have evolved and are doing some nice work-nice on camera too.
I like bitchin rides and GC but the only ones I record is FantomWorks and Legendary Motorcars.
If I had the money I would buy a car from Legendary Motorcars!

Theres a guy on Youtube, Pete from SouthWest Rod and Custom. (SWRNC) He is better to watch, he cusses a lot, but he is reality of how a body resto shop operates on a daily basis. Good DIY teacher for those that are doing their own body work. I would like to see him get a show, but in a way he already has one on youtube.

I watch all the same shows, even the occasional graveyard carz. I would agree the iron resurrection is an excellent show. Not sure who I would go to to build me a custom car if money were no object. I'm leaning towards kindig bitchin rides or Iron resurrection. That guy Pete on YouTube, I've watched a couple episodes, he is just way to angry at the world. Sometimes funny, but often times just angry ignorance. Skilled guy, no doubt. He would struggle on a reality show, no one would know what he is talking about as they would have to bleep out 90% of what he has to say. Lol. IMHO.

I agree about Pete cussing allot, but it comes from the stress of being a shop owner, basically being "the only one" who knows what they are doing. I think a lot of his problem is he hires idiots, and that is enough to frustrate anyone. But you get what you pay for when hiring people. Pete does do good work though, and I appreciate that he shares his knowledge with YT land LOL!

Lol. Maybe he needs to try some meditation or something first before filming himself for the world to see.

i got a kick out of the first two episodes... remember its a tv show so there has to be drama in it.. so far there has been some decent advise given... those two shops were a mess. i'd like an update to see if they are any better now..

I'd be willing to bet both those shops will be as junky and un-organised in 6 months as they were when filming started. Rawlins is a pompous *** but to have a net worth of $ 15 Million he can't be too stupid. As for the show..time will tell.Iron Ressurection is one of the better ones on right now...They build some real nice cars and seem to be real genuine good guys.Another new one that builds nice cars is RMD Garage but that guy that owns it throws around WAY too many " Dudes" and " Bro's' for me.

^^^^ I don't know man, money doesn't equate to intelligence, if one wants money, all they have to do is break the law and screw a few people over.Has anyone looked into how Rawlings made his money? He didn't do it being an auto mechanic that's for sure. I usually watch Rawlings and say to myself, "Why am I sitting here watching these fools, I'm going out to the garage and working on my Dart".

I don't equate success with being a cheater.:rolleyes:. You don't have to be a top notch mechanic to make money in a shop..just hire the right people. It's called being a good businessman.Don't get me wrong I wouldn't want to hang out with him but give him props for his sucess.

When it comes to Richard Rawlings, yes he's a millionaire, but he's also a tool, like said, I usually get up and walk away when his show is on, if it was more about the cars and less about drama it would be a good show, speaking of good show, Jay Leno's garage is always fun to watch...

Rawling's behavior during the Street Outlaws episodes sealed the deal for me...what a tool. Also, seeing the Garage Rehab ad with him wearing Kim Kadarshian shades made me puke...

I watched the first two episodes. Didn't like it much. But, there is a performance shop here in OKC that hosts the annual MOPAR dyno day the night before the MOPAR car show. The local club puts it together every year. The shop seems to be mostly be LS engines with a couple ford's and the odd mopar from time to time. This year the shop had done some remodeling and is quite a bit better. They epoxy coated the floors, put a window from the lobby into the dyno room, put a TV and projector up to see the dyno results, some nice chairs and organized the shop area. Just so happens that I spotted a few clips of the shop in the Comercial for the new rawlings show. I'm excited to see that episode and probably won't watch any others.

That pictured "X" pipe appears to be an attempt to follow the example of David Vizards advice on exhaust pressure wave cancellation box.

Holy crap, those pictures! I think all the shows on tv are pretty much crap except for Wheeler Dealers and Myth Busters. I can't stand the added drama and all the fake bullshit. I do enjoy a lot of internet based shows where you actually get to see people wrench and have fun on cars I could own. I like a lot of the stuff Motortrendondemand put out. Some of it is completely free on YouTube. I pay like 4 dollars a month and can watch it all for that.

Same concept as Bar Rescue really.....trying to change failing businesses to succeed and make money. People hate change

he may act like a goof for the tv but he is no dummy thats for sure... made his money marketing..

he has marketed the hell out of gas monkey and himself.. lots of hard work.. how can ya not appreciate that.. he is living the american dream man..

n 1993, Rawlings was briefly married to Karen K. Grames, but divorced the following year.[18] In 1999, he married his second wife Suzanne Marie Mergele in Las Vegas, Nevada[18] (the couple divorced in 2009, however remarried in 2015 in Cabo, Mexico).[19] That same year[20] Rawlings started Lincoln Press,[21] a printing/advertising company.[22]

The problem with garages is the customers, most everyone wants their car fixed on the cheap or what we call affordably. After these garage owners remodel their garages, they will have to charge more$$$ for their work to pay Rawlings back on his "investment". Then they will lose customers and close. Rawlings will end up with the building (maybe). So yeah, he's a smart dude weaseling real estate out of unsuspecting garage owners. They need to have a "where are they now" three years after Rawlings and his crew pull out, see how well they are doing in an already highly competitive business.

Except the guy at westside hot rod doesn't own the building, he said in the show his parents owned it and rented it cheap to him. I'm sure his parents made sure their butts are covered. Even if Rawlings picked up the lease, I'm sure they would charge him what it's worth each month and not the family price. Not sure about the grapevine shop, but I would be shocked if he owns the building either. As he said he struggled to make the monthly bills on it. So Richard might own a business at the end, but unless he gets the lease that's all he has.
