Hello everyone,
I'm a B body fan and owner, but have obtained a 1969 383 gts block and was hoping some of you knowledgeable A body people could help me out. I have an interested buyer, but not sure of the value. The engine is all apart but all major components are with it. (In boxes) Any help or information would be appreciated. vin is LS23H thank you

If you have the original exhaust manifolds, they will go for 750 plus. Big block oil pan, #893 I believe, is unique and worth a bit, at least a few hundred bucks. They make a repro oil pan now for them, so the price has probably dropped. The block is tapped on the front driver side for unique motor mount, but there are a fair share of big blocks that have the bosses to do this. Everything else is the same as other 383s, as far as I know. The engine is worth most to whoever owns the matching car. My two cents.

If the car still lives it could be worth much more. You posted in the right place and maybe a member is looking for it! Thanks for doing such!

Dont really think its worth more than any other 383 hp block.
An A body block is worth considerably more than a regular 383 as the motor mount casting for the A body does not have the second mount pillar, and clearly has not ever had one. So, anyone familiar with an original A body car will see right away if the block did not come from an A body car. Also, All A body blocks have only one pillar, and are never stamped HP.

Not sure I would say considerably more, certainly it is to the person who owns the car to where this block belongs, if it still exists. IMHO, to gouge that person would be kind of morally bankrupt... It is an a-body only block - true, but the regular 383 will also fit in any other body, including an a-body. One can also mill the left rearward engine mount off of a regular 383 to create the effect. The mounting tab was milled off at the factory with a small amount of the stub remaining. The milling marks are clear on the factory blocks. It wasn't a specially cast block but had an added step in its finishing process. Yes, it wouldn't be a "real" 383 a-body block, but it also isn't correct either way especially when and if VIN's are introduced into the equation.
It is in the other parts that it becomes (considerably) worth more, oil pan, dip stick and tube, exhaust manifolds these are very unique to the a-body only. The oil pan, stick and tube, are now being correctly repopped. There once very high value is now diminished. I can see both sides of the story though...

Not all 383 blocks have both bosses for the A-Body drivers side mount either. A good majority of them do because that mount was first used on the 65-66 C-Body. I have sold true 383 A-Body blocks for $2-300 more than a typical 383 block. I gotten up to $500 for a nice A-Body 383 block.

I was going to say - 383 blocks on their own are not worth much. HP, non-HP, misc years... they might get $150-200 if you have a buyer that wants one. But - a true A body one I'd expect should be able to get a couple hundred more. It's not a needle in a haystack nor do they carry the mystique of a Hemi or something like that.

Can you post the rest of the VIN. I have a friend who is trying to locate the block from his 69 383 Dart, and you are not too far from me.

Also some of the C body 383's have the boss that can be drilled and tapped for the A body mount. That is what I did on my 68 383 GTS

I feel lucky, whereas my 69' cuda has a build date of 1 August 68, and the block I had to use is from a 68' 383 GTS dated may 20th 68 . So a year apart, but only 9 weeks in reality. I am just happy that it is going together, and agree with Rocky that just having it is good enough.

Never seen a 440 block with BOTH bosses to drill, only one. Please show me a picture of one, if they had them both then why did Mr. Norm have to take a 383 mount, stretch it apart, then weld an angle iron section on it?

Good question, never could figure that out.

This is a 69 440 (E440) I put in my 383-s with stock 383 A-body motor mounts. I drilled and tapped both bosses myself so I know they had them. Rod
