Hey all, I'm getting my 383 back from cleaning today and was wondering what paint to use. It's for a 68 383 destined for a 69 barracuda, so I know its the turquoise, but which paint do most people use? I found mixed reviews from every paint I found, so wondered if anyone had personal experience with the accuracy of color and paint coverage. Thanks!

The MP paint in Turquoise is pretty good stuff if you shoot it over an epoxy base, like SEM or PPG DP. SEM you can get in a spray can. If your looking for a quart to spray through a gun, you might try Roger Gibson/Frank Badelson, Totally Auto, etc.

just wondering, would not a 393 hp engine in a 69 be orange. the date of casting on the block has nothing to do with the factory color????? yes 68 cars had tourquise.

From everything I’ve read is a standard 383 which is what would have been in my barracuda (not HP) was turquoise. The orange was starting in 70 or for HP engines.

69 HP 383 was all you got in a 69 Barracuda Formula S or 'Cuda and both were Hemi Orange with chrome covers!

Your car so do what makes you happy. That is all that matters!

Do you have a source for the that? I found where orange with chrome covers could be an option on the 69 barracuda but not standard. The engine I bought was pulled from a 69 barracuda and it looks like the original color was turquoise. The only standard orange I have found was for the high performance 383 which I was told the barracudas did not have. Heres what I found about the orange and chrome, and thanks for bringing this up. My car is a formula S and since I'm trying to do an accurate restoration, I'd like to figure this out.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

I had posted that For Tony D.

It hard to tell anymore as much as these cars have been messed with. 67 was torqouise, maybe 68 but 69 was Hemi Orange and I "think" 68. Here is some more supporting documents from 69 and I am sure some others will chime in. PM BB-Dave he is a great resource and has more than 1.

I always thought they used the same 383 that came in Road Runners. All '69-'71 HP 383s were supposedly Hemi Orange.

It was! But had the S designation as posted above^^^^^.

It was all marketing, they could not tell you the cheaper lighter Barracuda had the same engine as the flagship Road Runner! The driver side exhaust manifold dropped some power but otherwise the engines internally are the same.

By the way there is 2 colors of the orange. As they built no race Hemi in 69 the correct color is Street Hemi Orange.

Okay, well maybe it was repainted when it was bored over. Thanks for the help! So in that case what street hemi orange does everyone suggest for an accurate color? is the mopar paint accurate? I know the turquoise used to be until they changed the formula, is the orange the same way or is it okay? Thanks again.

I used the Mopar rattle can Street Hemi Orange, it has held up well for three years now. An epoxy version would likely be better but I assume the Mopar version is about as correct as you can get.

69 was a unique year for the 383-4V and what color it was painted. In 69, the 383 HP (RR, Charger, Superbee, etc) stamped motors were Hemi Orange (save for maybe a real real early car where production was getting used up), and these were rated at 335 horse... and few ponies less in the A-body.

Now this changes if you happen to order a RR/Superbee/Charger (mainly B-bodies) in 69 and you wanted air conditioning. Then, you got a 330-horse, 383 with a 4-barrel, but the engine was turquoise. You couldn't get a 383-4v with air in an A-body, so it would technically, be a Hemi-orange paint only for them. The turquoise motors were "4-barrel" motors and not Magnum/Roadrunner motors and the blocks were not stamped HP. But, to make things more confusing, the cars still carried the same engine VIN designation. An "H".

I have an H-code 69 Charger SE, all numbers. It has air and got the turquoise 4V motor. The original pie tin says 383-four barrel. If it had no air, it would have received an orange engine, and the pie tin would have said 383-magnum.
