Ordered My Disc Brake Conversion Kit

-
So I made it to In-Line Tube yesterday and picked up my M/C lines and distribution block, hope they fit as good as they look. Also had a little time today to get the spindles together and get the new 1.03 PST torsion bars and the lower control arms installed, they went together very nice. Still need to adjust them, for right now they are just sitting in there. I will have some time to work on it tomorrow, right now I am heading to my son's house to watch the MSU vs Notre Dame game out side on the big screen. GO GREEN!

I got a little more work done to the Barracuda today. The spindles are both on, the dust shields are both on, got the sway bar hooked back up and the outer tie rods are re connected. Hope I will have some time tomorrow to get the bearings packed and get the rotors on. I am getting closer and so far so good.

Packed and installed the wheel bearings last night, the rotors come with the bearing races already installed so your kit will have an extra set that comes with the new bearings. Then put the rotors on, they look and fit great. Cleaned off my finger prints with some brake clean and installed the calipers, same thing they look and fit great. I found out that the little rubber band goes on the top caliper locator only and that is what it shows in the instructions. Then I installed the brake hose, it was a lot easier to install the brake hose with the caliper off so I could fit my fat fingers in there to start the brake hose bolt. The only issue that I have had so far is that one of the out board pads rubbed on the center of the rotor hub just a bit, and it made a small grinding noise so I took it back off and just sanded off some of the paint, now it works just fine. I also installed one of my rally wheels to see if there was any clearance problems, nothing everything fits great and no rubbing or hitting of any kind. Also it looks like I will not have any problems with fender clearance, I have the same amount of room that I did with my drum brake set up. So far so good, this kit seems great. Hope to have the M/C and brake lines on this weekend, get it bled then get it out for a front end alignment.

Don't be in too big of a hurry Joe, take your time and make sure everything is torqued down the way it is explained. This kit goes together real nice just have patience.

Thanks for the advise. Actually the engine isn't even in the car, its at the machine shop and wont be back for at least 2-3 weeks. This will keep me busy until then. I also plan on taking advantage of going over the rest of the front end as well.

OK the only thing I have left to do is mount the new distribution block, hook up the brake lines and bleed the system then get the front end aligned. Hope to be finished with it real soon. I want to go for a ride to see if it was all worth it. Should ride better with the new PST 1.03 torsion bars, squeak a little less with the new lower control arm bushings and new strut bar bushings, and stop a little better with the new disk brakes and a duel master cylinder. Any one have any questions feel free to contact me, this Pirate Jack kit which is really MBM brakes was a breeze, and my small bolt pattern rally wheels work just fine. Oh by the way both rotors come with right hand thread wheel studs, so if you want to keep your left hand thread set up then you will need to knock out the studs and replace them with the left hand ones. Me I am going to change the rear axle studs and just stick with the right hand thread all the way around. One more thing, if you notice in the last few pictures I have an after market sway bar "ADDCO" and I turned the bolts up side down so I would have more clearance to the lower ball joints to spindle nuts.
Thanks for watching
Bob

Thanks for sharing the process! Seems like this is by far the best option for retaining the SBP. Bolt on install with factory parts (minus only the modified rotors). Only question I see is the modification to the outer hub thickness but that means the old wheels fit (and I’m sure the hubs are still strong enough).

And, should you decide later to go BBP, you’d just need a set of stock 73+ rotors up front. Well, and new wheels of course.

I have a question for you. On the upper control arm ball joint which needs the extra sleeve installed, you used the flange nut supplied instead of the castle nut? Its tight and the castle nut barley covers the hole in the spindle.

Per directions in the kit, you are to tighten up the ball joint with the castle nut then remove it and install the supplied flange nut which looks like it is not all the way tight but it is. Just following directions, there must be a reason they want you to do it this way so I did.

Yes that is the way I understand it as well and that's what I did. Just doesn't seem right, wonder what my mechanic will say when it goes in for the front end alignment? I must say though that's the only hiccup I see, everything else looks great!

Finished the install today. Only other issue I had was the disk was rubbing the outboard pad pretty bad on the drivers side. The disk itself turned true but the wall of the disk is definitely out of round and enough to hit the pad for about 3" of travel had to do a little minor grinding, was way beyond sanding.
As far as clearance remember this is a 14" SBP rally wheel. I have no clearance issue at all on either wheel, but it is tight between the caliper and wheel less then an 1/8". The front track is now about 1-1/8" wider on each side, works for me.

I used this kit on Victoria, I did use castle nuts and drilled a hole for a carter key to be used is all I did different

Hey Joe, mine had a small amount of out of round also and I did the exact same thing that you did just a little grinding on the bottom of the outboard pad to clear it better. I contacted Pirate Jack about this issue and spoke to a guy by the name of Eric at EXT 218. He told me that they sell a lot of kit's and had never heard of this problem before. So they sent me another rotor and the one they sent me was more out of round than the original one so I kept the original one and sent the other one back for them to look at. Please if you have the time call Pirate Jack and enter extension 218 and talk to Eric, he thinks I am the only one who has ever seen this issue. If you do talk to him please get back with me and let me know how it went.
Thanks
Bob

Mike, I like your idea! I am concerned about the flange nut not locking, the nut is to thick to meet the locking crimps. I was going to see if I could find a little thinner grade 8 locking flange nut.
