Everything on the engine looks clean , but the gunk on the valve cover can't be good . Doesn't smell like gas , has the look of baby food , a little watery. like steam was mixing with the oil spray on the valve cover? oil on the dip stick looks good , any thoughts?

Short trips. Lack of oil changes, engine running too cold.
I wouldnt put too much thought into it,unless its losing a lot of coolant.

Condensation..... Clean those covers. Wipe it off the rockers best you can. Change oil & filter. Cheap oil ok. Run engine until fully hot. Drain oil "hot". Change filter. Now put in your "good" oil & filter.

Get it hot, as in up to operating temp. when it gets cold in late fall, i cover half of the rad until winter put away.

Saw it all the time on Buell's and Hd's. Get it hot as mentioned, change oil and filter, as mentioned, then get friends in faraway places and visit them once every week or two.

Check your PCV and breather to make sure everything is clear and working properly, and consider setting up the PCV line with a catch can if you do a lot of short trips.

Do you drive car on a regular basis or just run it a few minutes in the garage? If that's your MO, you should be driving it. I have a 71 cuda, 74 duster and 10 SRT and only start them when I can run them at least 20 miles.

Yeah Bro, the Gawdawful spring & summer of almost non-stop rain & it's companion high humidity We had in PA got sucked right in the breather along with the fresh air.
You already know what to do............

Ahhha, the humidity of PA I know it well....
Just got to say that it is common with those cold blooded Slants.(my favorite engine.) As stated above PCV has allot to do with it. When I was racing my Slant drag Dart I removed the PCV and installed Vac-u-Pan system and that's what the inside of my cover looked like.Went back to the PCV system and all went away. Just a thought. I also used to run a 160* thermostat in my 170 Valiant.Changed it to a 195* and the car did much better as a daily driver. Most of my driving was 3 to 5 miles one way.

Yeah depending on how humid it is, that can happen with the vehicle just sittin up.

Before you start it, Loosen up the drain plug and let some fluid out. If it is just oil close it back up and do as the others have suggested. If not...

Usually i run up my seasonal stuff until they reach operating temp.

Thanks everyone , will do the cleaning up and changing oil , I did not drive it far this summer , and left it idle a lot after the carbs rebuild and tuning.

Flakes of carbon

See it lots inside high milers.

i pulled my valve cover the other day and saw the same thing just not nearly as bad. i cleaned everything up and drove it a lot over the weekend. going to check it again this coming weekend. I did have this happen on a 292 inline 6 on my old chevy c10 and it was a blown head gasket. crossing my fingers that its not the same thing here

A little more input is that the valve cover won't get hot enough to evaporate the water unless the car is driven enough to really heat up. Water accumulates at the top of the cover and never heats up enough to get rid of water ( need at least 212 degrees). That's the problem with garage queens.

Check to be sure that the line to the base of the carb from the PCV valve is not blocked. It is common on these to see that line blocked with gunk where it enters under the base of the carb.

so any how .. I read the threads on adjusting the valves , and Dan had great instructions , I just don't know the difference between " You want a slide-fit , which is tighter than a loose-fit " Dan can you help me out? How Tight should it feel? Or anyone.
