hey all
I did a disc brake swap bought the whole kit installed it on the car but had no idea that it wouldn't work with 14" SBP steel wheels it is the 73 up disc set up. I did the same swap on my 67 Barracuda but used 15" wheels. I started reading through the posts today after i figured out that the rims would rub. My question is can i use any of this set up if i buy a Kelsey Hayes set up? What is going to be the best fix besides going to BBP wheels and 15" The steel wheel I'm using is a 14"by 5.5" wide it rubs against the caliper. What I've read is the Kelsey Hayes set up is the only thing that will work with my wheels so what all will i have to buy to make that work?? I'm lost
Thanks

What kit did you buy? I converted my 1967 Barracuda to ‘73 up BBP using parts from a ‘75 Duster and I’m running the 14” Rallye rims with 225/60R14 tires with no issues.

If your asking about the 65-72 Kelsey Hayes, 4 piston caliper, disc brake systems, nothing from the 73 up brakes will interchange.
Two totally different designed brake systems between the 4 piston, and single piston, set up's.

It was a kit i got off of EBay my steel wheels are small bolt pattern they are 14 by 5.5 wide so the back space must not be enough it rubs on the inside of the rim along the front of the caliper. I read the install directions in small print at the bottom it says might not fit with some steel wheels and the small bolt pattern cragers. The whole set up may be a Chinese knock off. The set up i did on my 67 i piece meald it together from junkyard parts.

Not even the spindles or the rotors can be used or the backing plate? I would have to start from scratch?

There is a post below mine on this forum of a guy with a 66 cuda it is the same kit Pirate Jack from Ebay but the caliper rubs on my steel wheels.

Yep, that's what you will be up against.
All or nothing.

Maybe a couple of 1/8" wheelspacers might be all you need to clear the calipers.
You can test this by putting 1 or 2 large washers behind the wheels and torque them down, while checking if they still clear the brakes.
Once they clear just measure the thickness of the amount of washers you used and get spacer at that thickness.

Although, if the caliper rubs the wheels on the outside, you may just need different wheels.
Some wheels of the era are formed differently than the later ones, which might clear the brakes without issues (unless the system is actually designed to be used for 15" wheels ofcourse, then you're SOL).

Mopar actually had drum brake rims, and disk brake rims.
The drum rim spokes are longer on the inside of the wheel.
Found this out years ago.

Jeez, aint nobody ever heard of a grinder?
I know its redneck, but it was done for a lot of years.

spacers pull the rims away from the hub reg on the rim centers . thats important to help carry the load on the front tires .

I thought about that I may look into that option. I wanted to keep this car as stock as possible. It had ten inch front and back drum brakes

well i have some stock k/h 65-72 a body calipers that need rebuilding i would sell .

True, but i have been running 35” wheels on my power wagon with a snow plow for 12 years. Dont recall where i got the wheels, but there’s 1/4” between hole and hub. Is hauled all the firewood it can carry as well as the plow.
470,000 km on the truck original studs.

Well, the calipers are not stock -- just grind a clearance on them. They always have a ton of meat.

well tooljunkle , is it have a 4'' bc with 5 7/16 studs holding the rim on . car steel rims are a bit thinner than p/u rims as well . they can flex enough to pop the wheel covers off . just saying . i had an issue with ssbc disc alloy alum calipers rubbing the rims . i believe that the calipers bodies were cut down on the areas for clearance .

You could try 14" SBP rally wheels -- the inside of the wheel center is a completely different profile. If you didn't want that look, just put the wheel covers back over them. Actually, I don't know if that works, but they take trim rings -- why wouldn't they take wheel covers?

Since the brakes are already on there, I would just get a pair of 73 wheels, standard or rallys as you may prefer. I don't get the big deal. But I just gotta say that I'm pretty sure I have 14" rallys on my 1980 Volare, which has those same 1973 type brakes. So wheels gotta be out there. My wheels are old, probably 73/74 F-body. They've been on pretty much every late-A I've ever owned.
But I also gotta tell you that the KHers are awesome, but you will need everything as already stated.

Yes sir. That's mostly what I found out on all the disc brake kits that claim to work on 14" SBP wheels. I also wanted to use the factory steel wheels, so I bought a KH setup from someone on this site. I haven't installed them yet, but with 4.5" or 5.5" wide steel wheels, the calipers clear by about 3/16". So the original parts you need are the spindles, hubs, and dust shields. You need the original calipers, but many places sell rebuilt calipers. Everything else is readily available.

Another approach would be to order 15" steel rims from Stockton Wheel. Wheel covers would be the problem, but dog dishes would work fine.

Just to give an update I picked up a set of SBP rally wheels 14” by 5.5 and I have the clearance now so problem solved now I will be putting the steelies which are SBP 14”by 5.5 up for sale on the FABO plus the fancy hub caps that I was going to use. Thanks for everybody’s input.
