I have a 71 SLANT duster, the underhood wiring harness (original??) it has the two field wires, but looks like it was set up for the points dist ( it still has)..
question is when did they go to ECU ? and did the slant go to that at the same time as the V8 ??

IIRC some Chryslers got it in 71.

Looks like there is no perfect answer. I looked up distributors and found electronic's listed for 72 but not 71.

my other question is in with POINTS distributor, in 70 or 71 did they go to the 2 field alternator and the "newer" style voltage regulator??

From what I see 72 was the year it first appeared along with points also.

I will start writing dates down when I do them, bet it was a split in 72 somewhere.

My GF (later wife) ordered a 1972 Ply Satellite Sebring Plus in the fall of 1971. At the time electronic ignition was standard on the hi-po engines. She had me look over her option list and I told her to add dual body-colored racing mirrors and electronic ignition. IIRC it was about $30 extra. The car was a 72 and arrived in November of 71.
My best friend ordered a 1972 340 4 Speed Duster and elec ign was standard.

I remember an Arthur Godfrey Chrysler TV commercial where he stood by a car in a raincoat while a fire hose doused the engine compartment with water. Engine kept running.

I know for sure all the 340 4 speed 72 hp enginges were dual point prestolights as a option, just been through that one with a customer. I can go through my 72-23 sun cards and get this clarified for sure if wanted.

OK here is what I got from the sun cards they are 99% right usually. 72 all slants are P(points) E (Electronic) came in in 73
all these are 72
340- 240 hp are E
360- 175 hp are P
400- 190, 225, and 265 hp are P
440 -225 hp are P
440- 280. 290hp and six pack are E

73 all electronic. 71 all point, now there are the special orders like MP and dual point options to consider these are the stock production years. Hope it helped. Good question though. I knew 72 was the crossover just did not know exactly what and when.

My '72 Duster, 318, had electronic VR, and points distributor. Traded for a '73 Satellite, full electronics.
