BEWARE OF DOG

Big ..john how old is your dane
He's about 8 or 9 and his name is House.

He was a rescue and had a pretty tough life before we got him. The story is he was in some sort of puppy mill at first. He has a bite shaped piece missing from one ear. From there he was taken in by a man named John who ran a Great Dane rescue. John was responsible for teaching him some manners and obedience. He did a great job with him too. We're not sure of the timeline, but John passed away. House may have been with him when that happened... For the first year, I couldn't nap anywhere around him because he would be nudging me to wake up.

From there, he went off to a family with a bunch of kids. They let him run the neighborhood... and also had a reputation for returning rescued dogs after they grew tired of them. We're not sure how she got him, but I think she was a friend of John's. She decided she didn't want him anymore and called the rescue folks.

Since John's death, the rescue hadn't been doing well and was disbanding. My wife's friend was involved (she has a bunch of Danes!) and she knew we had just lost our two previous Danes within six months of each other. She said he would be a good "fit" for us and we drove to North Carolina to pick him up.

We've had him five years now... and he was estimated to be four when we got him.

Since then he's become my dog... He's good with everyone else... but he's definitely my dog.

For a Dane, he's a little guy... Not as tall and thin as our other Danes had been, more short and stocky. He's also the smartest Dane I've ever had.... But he has some things that he never figured out either. He never would jump up in my truck.... and he's never figured out the snow either. I've never had a dog that didn't love to play in the snow... We have to shovel a path for him to crap in the winter.

He's showing the effects of his age... and his past... in his health now. I don't expect to have him around much longer, sorry to say.

With one of my grandkids..
