Did some searching but I am not coming up with anything. Does anyone know of a company or place to purchase a narrow stock location/stock mounting fuel tank for a 1968 Dodge Dart?

I'm just finishing up a spring relocation and will be getting it mini tubed next and I'm seeing that I really won't have room to run 3 inch exhaust pipes out the back like I want to. I'd prefer not to have to put a fuel cell in the trunk so I thought maybe someone makes a narrower tank to mount in the stock location?

Thanks in advance!

This is one of my projects for the winter. I've got a 67 so I have the one year only tank and will eventually be converting to fuel injection. My goal for the winter is to get 3" tail pipes out to the edge of the car, whether that's behind the tires or all the way to the bumper.

I believe that mine has a B body tank installed. They floor is flat / the spare tire well has been removed. Andrew

Here are some photos

A friend of mine narrowed my stock 66 Barracuda tank when we did the spring relocation and mini-tub. He took out enough to have the same gap on the right as it does on the left.

Interesting! I bought an A body tank off ebay, and have about 1/2" clearance on both sides w/ a 3/4" offset spring hangar set up.???????????

Maybe the later a-bodies are different. The early a-bodies 66 and earlier have the gas tank offset to the passenger side of the car for exhaust clearance.

That's how my 68 is. About 3 inches on the driver side and 1/2 inch on the passenger side. Thinking I may just attempt to narrow a stock tank for now.

Nice! Thats something i have thougth alot about atempting, but after some basic measuring i always thought that the tank may probably be just alitle long but you proved me wrong here,i noticed that it loks like the beam conecting they framerails in the back seems to be notched on your car, could you please take a picture of that area aswell and maybe give a basic estimate on how much was needed cut out for future reference?

Will do, I bought the car this way. Not sure why they notched the frame rails the way they did. I also think the spring relocation is further in than most. I have a 12" wide rim with 325/50/15 on the rear with room for more if I wanted. I have ordered a set of Caltracs to help take the stress off of the rear kick. I will go take some more pics in a bit. Andrew

Here are some more pics. I don’t think I would have notched the frame the way they did, but it has held up ok so far. The tank is roughly 25 1/2” wide by 39” L. Hope this helps. Andrew

I think if you search back, there is a coupla posts with members finding a good muff shop that "wanted to" make 3" work, and did.. Was real nifty sneaking pipe out over the spring back in behind the tank, tips in stk, or very near stock location.. really fine pipe work by some fine craftsman.
.. IIRC..

they make oval exhaust pipe, that is equal in overall surface (or however it is measured) to 3 inch round tube
(think of it this way, a 2X2 square is the same surface as a 1X4 sqaure, the same principle applies to round and oval, just with more complex calculations)

well, someone done did these calculations and made some oval tubes that will flow the same as the round 3 inch tubes but are narrower to fit in between relocated springs and stock tanks

Oval style exhaust is certainly something I could look into. The other thing I'm now debating about is if I want to move the axle back an inch for 29 inch tires instead of 28's. If I do that I'd just put a fuel cell in the spare tire well and then I wouldn't have any issues fitting the exhaust out the back. Decisions decisions...

I had thought about cutting the spare tire well out and using a 62-65 Fairlane tank. I think they're 24" wide and the right length. Fuel sender is the right ohms too.
