Thought I would take a moment and post a few pics of the only 66 D-Dart road race car in action 10/14/17 at the Lake Garnett Grand Prix in Kansas. It actually does compete in vintage races now, it is not sitting in a museum!! Next race at Eagles Canyon Raceway, Decatur, Texas with CVAR 12/8/17.

Yes, it’s my car. Put a lot of work into the suspension, drivetrain right after I bought it, as well as safety equipment, tech inspection, log book, etc. I love the car. Engine is mild now, new 300 cid currently being built to 1972 scca gcr rules using 273 block and crank, 340 j heads. Can’t tell you the rest...lol, but shifting @ 7,500 that small block is loads of fun!!!! It’s an absolute blast!!

Thanks for posting the closeup photos. Man that Dart is cool. Love, love those 273s and had a lot of fun with two of them back in the day. That new engine should be cranking out some HP!
 
Super cool that you are racing it! love these early A's and i like the wheels you put on it too. looks like you moved the rear springs in to get some more tire under there? did you keep the front suspension stock as far as torsion bars? thanks for the pics.

Car is legal vintage race prepared. We are required to use stock stock style suspension components that were available during the era from '66-'72. Reinforcement plates were added in areas. Firm Feel front torsion bars 1.14", 1.25" front sway bar, 1.00" rear sway bar, quick ratio 16:1 box. Car has vintage underride bars like a Shelby Mustang of that era instead of the snubber, complimented by a vintage set of Direction Connection competition rear leaf springs (not super stock). Car handles extremely well, very competitive. The springs are not moved, wheels special ordered with specified offset to get the Goodyear Sportscar Specials 600x15 tires under it at all four corners. No more tire could be put under it without body mods, which I will not do.
 
thanks for the info very interesting! those look like some fat rear tires i thought for sure you had the springs relocated. lol I dont blame you for not wanting to cut the car up. I imagine your car is very competitive with your upgrades. it will be cool to see the horsepower/torque your new 300 ci engine will put out.
 
I really like your car. I saw it in the Seattle area a few years ago when it had the Minilites on it. Have any engine pics?
 
Pretty much looks like the pic above less the cooling fan now removed. We don’t run a fan at all any longer. Car is always moving when running, so not needed. New motor will have the commando valve covers back on it.
 
Really glad to see the car out of the auction circuit. I too saw the car along with the white D/Dart several years ago in Seattle. I seriously explored buying the car given its racing history. However, the car was missing some key parts and paying out a vast amount of money just for that LO23 number just didn't fit into my plan. I would of loved to run that car at the Maryhill hill climb.

Well, I won't say what I paid for it, but I own a classic car repair and restoration center. I can tell you this, no way I could have built the car you saw for what I paid for it, and it was far less than what it sold for to the previous buyers. Basically, the purchase price equaled what it would have cost to do all the paint/body work (if you started out with a nice car).

Having just finished another resto with most of the work done myself I would agree. Most the time the car ran the auction circuit it was sold and bought by flippers. Race cars at auction is hit and miss. I'm glad you got the car and that it will be enjoyed by someone who'll appreciate the car.

Did you take the Minilites off?

Yes, I took the Minilites off. They are 15x8, had tire rubbing issues big time in the rear. Besides, minilites didn't come on to the scene until around '68 time period getting more popular by '70. The 5 spoke American mags are more period imho. plus, the narrower 7" width was a better fit for my car.

Either way they fit that car. What class are you going to run?
