I suspect the knobs were color coded to the interior for the most part; maybe on your wagon with the red interior they didn’t offer red knobs so it got black. After 52 years a lot can happen with different owners! Personally I like the chrome; it adds a bit of bling!

Today I painted the interior stuff a last time. Next will be clear coat. Then it's just the steering wheel and the C pillar post cover on passenger side left.
The cover on A pillar post on drivers side looks like someone took a chw out of it! I need a new one!
