bolting 833 to bell housing there is a quarter inch gap all around what is my probable problem

Can you spin the convertor? If not then it's not in the pump.

Oh dah it's a four speed.

then check the dowel pins,

Is it just the bell or is the trans bolted to it?

I guess I need to lean how to read,
The bearing retainer is to big for the hole in the bell?

the gap is between transmission and bell housing

Change your pilot bushing? Are you bolting the trans up without the clutch to checi it out? I always do that once before putting the clutch and flywheel in and rotate the output shaft to make sure there is no binding. That way when you put the clutch components in you will know if there are any issues with the assembly.

is this a new or different trans or has it been in before

check the diameter of the trans bearing retainer then see if the hole in the bell is the same size

If these are parts have not been previously bolted together, I would guess that you have a transmission with a 4.80 inch diameter bearing retainer and you are trying to put it into a bell housing with a 4.35 inch opening (see brian6pac post 3). You may luck out and find that the previous owner of the transmission put an adapter ring around the 4.35 inch bearing retainer to make it fit a 4.80 in bell housing. In that case, you can just take it off.

The crank may not be drilled deep enough for the input shaft. Was the engine an automatic before this?

bearing retainer is the wrong size

The crank pilot hole may be too shallow. If confirmed it's easy to just cut a 1/4" off the input shaft.

Take the bellhousing off the engine and try to put it on the trans. If it wont go on the trans its the retainer size if it does then it is probably the crank hole as I said earlier.

Like brian6pac said make sure you have the proper diameter bearing retainer for the bellhousing , there are different sizes.
