Thanks to all who responded I understand now what I am up against. This sounds like a project to tackle when I replace my tank which is on my list. I was hoping there was a cheap $20 cap that would give me an interim fix until then but that might not be possible.
When you replace the tank do yourself a favor and get the 72+ model. It has a single vent line in the front of the tank. You can remove the vapor canister from the trunk as it's no longer needed.
