Does anyone know what color of the tail light housing is supposed to be on a 70 Duster? Cleaned all the oxidation and grime off now I need to know what color to repaint them. Not sure if they were a natural metal or if they were painted grey or black?

Not sure they were painted ? My 72 Demon still looked a little rough even after cleaning so I painted them with a rattle can of ' cold galvanizing compound '. I used ' Duplicolor Chrome' on the inside.

They were not painted - as cast. Color varies a lot. Planning on finding some flat silver or aluminum paint to spray mine with

well the one you did not clean looks unpainted. and if they are as cast I do not see color varying much. after putting in the work to clean them I would spray them with satin clear

Thanks I was looking at the Eastwood “detail grey” supposed to look similar to bare metal. Here is their description of the paint. “formulated to duplicate the original look of die cast and stamped steel.” I’ll try one and post a picture when the paint arrives

Have you had any issues with the chrome paint on the inside? I was thinking about painting mine. I have 6 tail lights 3 of them have good plating and the others don’t. I’ve heard that some have had issues with the paint peeling due to the heat from the bulbs. But wanted to ask before I painted the bad ones. Didn’t think they generated that much heat

Have not had it done or run lights long enough to know. I believe when I restored my tail lights that they were origional. The chrome color was painted in them , runs were appearant. There was no sign of a real chrome plating. If you change to LED retrofit bulbs they will generate very little heat.

I tried other off the shelf brands of supposed chrome paint. They were not as "chrome looking " as the Duplicolor.

I painted mine Machine Grey on the outside, and flat white on the reflective side. Read a long time ago that white works just as well.

No as long as you prep it correctly. I used a scotch bright pad to scuff it up then wax and grease remover, then etching primer then paint.

use grease remover first, then scuff it, then wash it, then primer, then gloss white=most reflective

Iirc the housing is actually a galvanized metal, at least the ones on my demon appear to be. i used a simple green and water mixture with nylon and brass bristle brushes on my demon taillight housing, They cleaned up great
