Thinking about putting electric cut outs on my 69 Dart 340 with TTI headers, any pros or cons and best installation set up, (location). Thanks..

The way you measure optimum collector length is to look for the bluing on the collector or where the paint stops burning, thats where your supposed to neck it down to your pipes. probably the best place for a cutout too but it could be anywhere there is clearance. I think most of the modern cutouts are way back by the mufflers anyway, just a sound generator.

Had electric cut-outs on my Hemi Duster...would never go back to them now that they are removed (installed full TTI exhaust). They constantly had issues of not wanting to shut all the way, bolts falling out, etc.. Sounded cool when they worked, but not worth the hassle....

Waaay too slow
By the time they're open, the urge has passed, then you have to wait and wait and wait for them to close so the cops don't know who to give the ticket to. I just went with dual 3" pipes all the way, problem solved. Nice quiet idle and low-rpm, friggen screamers at 7200. You just have to learn to hit it for 2 or 3 seconds and then bang it into 4th real fast,lol..

Pros......none I can think of.

Cons.......

PITA to install.
More money spent.
Gets cops attention.
Sounds like total ***.

Spending money to make noise...
Not my cup of tea.
Like cold air intakes and cat-back exhaust systems.
Spend a grand on things that make you go, not things that make you go hmmmm....

I installed a set right after the collectors on my 408. Kept them there for about a year, used them maybe twice. Ended up taking them off and giving to a buddy who's building a gasser. Really was a pointless endeavor and a waste of money. To me, I think they're a thing of the past, back before high flow cats and mufflers, I bet I didn't gain an HP over just running cherry bombs. My advice, save your money, save your time.

My dad has a set on his mustang. He drives it a lot on long road trips so it is very nice while cruising down the interstate to have them closed and not much noise. Then when we get off the interstate and cruise around town he opens them up.

I have had cut outs on my dart for a few years now and 90% of the time the exhaust is open. Never once had an issue with cops because of loud exhaust but I did get a set of electric ones this winter.

It is all personal preference and I am sure a lot of guys don’t like the sound of a super loud exhaust but I’m not one of them.

Had them on my old Dart right after the collector and they sounded terrible. After that i just ran open headers when i wanted it to be loud.

Only open headers one time. After engine install, mandatory road test,no hood, open headers and just before dark. Braaaap!!
Then its official.

I got one on my Dodge Ram after the high flow cat just for the added fun it. I like it when its open. Has a deep "growl" to it. However the motor that opens and closes the butterfly went bad. Bought another one to fix it. I think what happened is the motor doesn't have a stoping point when it closes. Another words if you hold the switch to long to close it the motor will get damaged. Thinking that's what happened but I'm really sure. It just stopped working. The little gears in the motor was shot. Quicktime is the manufacture of my cutout.
I always shut the engine off so I can listen to the cutout motor open and close. Once I hear the motor bind I immediately let off the switch. Opening or closing it.
All and all it's a big hassle. I don't recommend it if you can live without it...lol

There was/is a member on here with a user name of "mop" I believe it was. He had a different type that was way better quality than the Quicktime. They had a exact stopping point opening or closing so there was no guessing on when to let off the switch. I could be wrong but think they was operated by vacuum.

Also wasted money. A well built exh. system will only slow ur car down about .03 of a second, between it and open headers, and I think that could have been the weight diff.

I was a disbeliever until I drove a buddies car with them on it. I was hooked. It's not about the sound at wide open throttle for me. I can live happily without that and have only done a full throttle blast or two with them open.

I like the sound when I open them when pulling into and out of car shows and other events. The music of an uncapped big block Mopar with a big cam loping along is one of my favorite noises. It's a real crowd pleaser too. I get nothing but thumbs up, even from the cops.

The trick most people miss when they install them is to use a megaphone type exhaust tip after the cut out. I use the ovalized cone type. It sweetens the sound much like a musical instrument does. The sound with a straight cut pipe and no coned tip doesn't sound anywhere near and good.

I had a buddy who had a shop install his cutouts way back by the mufflers, and it sounded like crap. The best place to mount them is after the collector and before any crossover in the system. More importantly is add a ovalized cone after them. It makes a huge difference.

I've also had bad luck with every brand except QTP. They have been ultra reliable for my and my buddy.

We have Quick Time cut-outs on my wife's Ford Raptor. We have had no issues with them. The key is to make sure you know the limits of the little motors to not open / close too far to mess up the gears. We have had them on for 4 years & they get opened a couple times weekly & have had no issues.

I have manual cutouts just aft of trans crossmember. Bolts are tacked with wing nuts, trans drops out without touching exhaust. Car runs .1 quicker opened up and throttle response improves. Takes 5 minutes to uncap and raise pinion snubber when I get to the track. Summit 2.5" system with quiet mufflers on the street.

I had this for years, now that I have a use for it. May weld it in right behind the header on my 6cly stang, it will be a hoot.

I got no statistics,
But One time I dropped my exhaust from the collectors back, for the heck of it, all 75 pounds of it, And the car still spun the 325Drs to way past the speed-limit,so what can I think but; Ask me if I care. It didn't seem to be any louder either at WOT,lol. My exhaust is all quick release, so like 5 minutes down , a lil more up. But I never did it again, since 2004. Waste of valuable time I thought, lol.
But you know; 75 pounds is still 75 pounds, so I imagined it was faster.
And.. I could finally hear the 230* cam, whispering in my ear; rumpidy, rumpidy, rump, rump. Whoopm, whoopm, whoop'em.
