I found this transmission for sale the seller says it is a 47RE from an unknown year. The speedometer cable attachment point looks to be an electrical plug from a newer ECM controlled truck. Can this be converted to accept a mechanical speedometer cable?

Loooking to swap into 1967 Barracuda with 418 340 stroker.

Any help and advise would be appreciated.

(Info added: this is a diesel bellhousing)

Speed sensors can be removed and replaced with the standard 904/727 speedo housing and gear.
You do know an RE trans is going to need a computer or shift controller, right?
You could end up needing that speed sensor so don't get rid of it.

Trail beast: I was looking at this speed controller to manage the RE

COMPUSHIFT Mini for Chrysler A518/46RH and Chrysler A618/47RH

I added one picture of the bellhousing. Does it look like the 340 LA bolt pattern to you? Do you know if the register or “nose” on the tourqe converter lines up and will fit in a Scat crank shaft (pn#9-340-4000-6123). I will measure both before purchasing it but at the moment I assume it is the 1968 larger size.

Thanks

Im fairly sure that the controller you are looking at will NOT control shifts on a RE series trans, you need to find a pre 94 or so version that is hydr except for overdrive and torque converter lockup.

Or, since it's a non-original setup and he'll already have to do crossmember and floor cutting to fit that big overdrive, just add fuel injection with a factory PCM setup to run the shifts on that trans.

The 47-series are one size heavier (internals) than the 46-series OD transmissions.
I wonder how much more power a 47 will rob compared to a 46, or even a 42-series (904) transmission.

looks like a diesel trans to me.
What is the numbers off the trans ( drivers side above the pan rail)
How many electrical pins in the yellow connecter.

You pose some good questions. My stroked 340 should make at least 400-425hp. I’m thinking the A500 won’t last but a year and the 727 inspired HD trans will be bullet proof. I’m not looking for the fastest car. I just want stout parts and if the price is right for the pictures 47RE I will get OD with a lockup converter and that will be OK with me. I just want to go places besides around town in my car and not kill my engine and be deaf when I get there.

That is a good idea....I will look into that. I work for a company that remanufactures engine computers. Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees. :thankyou:

After some research we think the seller has miss ID’ed the transmission in his listing and after a quick conversation with Mike at COMPUSHIFT we think the transmission is the RH46 or RH47. As soon as the person who has it for sale calls me back I will find out it it is a lockup or non lockup version. Mike says to count the pins in the oval tan/beige pug. Two pins non lockup and three pins it is the lock up style.

Mike told me there is a 90 degree speedometer adaper available for this unit and he has changed his electronic speedo pickup with his kit to a more durable design that as a 1 foot flexible to where you attach your mechanical speedo cable. It give you more flexabily to avoid your hot exhaust pipes.

And there are a lot of trees in these swaps.:D
There are really only two bell housing configurations for Chrysler V8 and those are small block and big block.
ALL small block V8 and even the V6 use the same pattern bell.
Don't know if the crank you are looking at has the large register or not for sure, but one would think they fit the later register since there are so many automatics in the car world.

Oh, and those trans tunnel pics, I don't think there was enough cut out of that hoop.
I had to cut the entire raised section of the hoop out for the 42RH to fit in the Dart.
The saving grace for me was that I have super duty frame connectors (2x3 .085 wall) so I wasn't concerned about loosing the support.

Even with the 90 adapter I don't think the OE speedo cable will reach, as mine was about 6 inches short and I had to get an 80 inch cable.
Hard to tell from the pics, but that may very well be the 46RH, and I can see the plug, but not enough to tell the number of pins. (3 pins is an RH lockup)
That also may very well be a diesel trans due to the 6 lugs on the converter.
All it takes to use a diesel trans is to change the governor for a gas one, and they are heavy duty as well but the converter wont fit the standard gas engine flex plate.

More trees.:D

The 42RH barely fits in the tunnel with no floor mods, but the bigger ones need more real estate.

That transmission is for a Cummins diesel, it's not going to bolt up to a small block.

Well that answers that then.
I thought I remembered 6 lugs on the converter was either diesel or aftermarket.

You are correct....it is for a diesel. I knew the transmission was to good to be true. I’m going to find and put a A500 or A518 in my Barracuda one way or another.

I appreciate your comments of the tunnel. Although it is expensive I like the US car tool cross member. I think a conservative approach of trim a little and test fit and trim a litttle more will be the plan.

Thanks for the advise on the 42RH and it’s relative size compared to the tunnel. I will look for a core and built it up.
