Anyone have any recommendations for kid/family friendly campgrounds in either Tennessee or Kentucky? Something preferably with a small lake and hiking trails and accessible via a 5th wheel camper.

We have stayed at these Kentucky State Resort Parks and found them to be really nice. There is tons to do and entirely kid friendly. Since the southern half of Kentucky is dry (no alcohol) the parks tend to be quiet and friendly. The lakes these parks are on are massive natural lakes.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park - Kentucky State Parks

Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park - Kentucky State Parks

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park - Kentucky State Parks

maybe too far away from where you want but we stayed at Persimmon Creek Campground - Home last year. its in the corner of NC (murphy) you can be in GA or Tenn in a few miles. great clean place. have a pond plus a trout pond. my daughter got to catch a trout and cook it for dinner. she loved that experience.. tons of things to do in the area.. but like i said it may be too far away from where you want to be..

Thanks! It's within my miles radius it looks like so it may be an option too

Forgot to mention that the Cumberland State Park has a trout hatchery nearby that stocks an onsite trout stream year round. Free access and normal fishing regs apply. The water is ice cold and is the same cold water used for the hatchery. The stream is a few hundred yards long and no more than 20' across. I went there every day while we were there and caught my limit.

You can also walk down to the marina and rent pontoon boats for going out on the lake.

It was one of the best parks I have ever been to.

I used to live in eastern Kentucky and I have traveled through central Appalachia A LOT.

1. Cherokee North Carolina
2. Great Smokey mountains national park
3. Cumberland falls state park
4. Red river gorge
5. Breaks interstate park (off the beaten path with very little tourism but it’s amazing)
6. Laurel river lake
7. Dale hallow (Lilly dale is my favorite campground on the lake)
8. Mammoth cave national park
9. Grayson highlands state park

All of those parks are great. Some campgrounds at the red are not so kid friendly because of the climbing scene but it is an amazing area.

Callie’s isn’t too bad but not much shade from what I saw and then I just saw a camp ground called whittelton. I was always in a tent so I can’t help too much there.

Just remember some State and Federal Parks don't have sewer hookups at the site, Just a dump station at the exit/entrance. They are installing more and more 50 Amp services but some only have 30 Amp..When We full time RV'd we preferred State and Federal Parks over RV Parks.

Thanks for the tip

Not worried about full hookup, camper has multiple waste tanks and potable water tanks. Usually lasts 4-5 people at least a week

Here are a few of our favorites.

- Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge State Park, Daniel Boone National Forest

- Cave Run Lake/Camp Zilpo, Daniel Boone National Forest

- Big Bone Lick State Park - very cool for the kids and adults, near Cincinnati and you could take in Kings Island as a diversion from camping for a day, many
awesome rides there.

FYI,
Marion
