I have the timing marks on the plate and balancer, but don't know where to set the timing on this modified engine. I was thinking of using a vacuum gage and adjust it to the highest vacuum at idle. Any thoughts on this, or a better way of doing it would be appreciated. Thanks

depends on "when" you are setting it

if we are talking about a tune up on an engine allready broken in, use the vacuum gauge like you said and set it where the engine likes it

if your building a new engine and need to break in the camshaft, put the timing around 40 degrees

then once it is properly broke in, you can do the vacuum gauge bit

It is a built engine, I will do what you suggest and write it down where it is happy! Thanks for your response

no problem
since it is broke in you can pretty safely play with it

i would also try to get the carb dialed in, while you got the vacuum gauge on it
