Hays Street/Strip Clutch 85-301

-
I agree the non Marcel disc makes cleaner shifts. I have run one in the past. My car is going to see more road time than strip time at this point and I doubt I could be consistent enough to win at the drag strip with the stick shift anyway. If I was serious about that, I would stick with the automatic. I want the clutch to be smooth in all driving conditions more than I want clean shifts with the possibility of chatter that I have experienced in the past with a non Marcel disc.

actually, a stick car can be more consistent over an automatic. depends on driver and setup. same as with an automatic!

We just installed a Hayes assembly in a 340 Demon build. 507 comp cam so the idle is at 1100. The clutch works flawlessly. I had to do the Z-bar mods for the TTI race headers. I was worried about the Heavy peddle pressure from the borg&beck style plate. Because I didn't do the bracing recommended by Hayes I thought it would break. But it was not a problem. With the heavier assist spring on 340 peddle assembly the peddle was softer than I expected. I would recommend this clutch.

McLeod Borg & Beck is the way to go. Mine made my leg shake. Last clutch I ever bought! Zoom is garbage and the Hayes didn't last either.

I was originally thinking about using the McLeod diaphragm clutch but I was leery of the half and half kevlar and organic disc. I also looked into the scalloped 10.95" long style McLeod. My brother used to have one in his Duster and it worked pretty good. The fingers seem flimsy to me though.

Yeah, but with street tires where you have to take off spinning, it makes it difficult.

I realize this is an old thread, however I post because it seems since the first post, Hays isn't using the black bargain store looking pressure plate any longer. After reading about the quicker shift potential without the Marcel, I have decided to give one of these a try.

In retrospect I never really liked the RXT in my car, don't like the diaphragm pressure plate pedal softness, and the clutch works like an on off switch, no modulation. No matter how I set it up, I've always struggled to get a quick clean shift at RPM.

When I install the clutch I will also go back to a light weigh flywheel, I put on a full weight flywheel a few years back, don't care for it either.

All of the b&b style clutch kits I use come from RAM.
I've tried reaching out to Ram, when they do not receive calls, and require email for service, I don't deal. I don't suggest their product isn't excellent, their customer service is different than I'm used to, I like a voice on the phone, can run scenarios by the tech person that way.

I run the Ram PowergripHD. Been in there for about 10 years. It's been flawless. It's been run at the track too.

How does it feel on engagement? What kind of pedal pressure?

I ended up going with the McLeod diaphragm clutch with organic disc. It holds good but I don't like the pedal feel. It gives resistance at first and then gets easy to push the rest of the way down even though I have removed the over center spring on the pedal. It doesn't suit me for power shifting. I might try that Hayes yet if I can get motivated.

The Hays clutch is on the way. For those interested, the static clamp load is 2004lbs. This will be coupled to a Ram 1503LW flywheel, which weighs 22lbs.

While the transmission is out, I will be adding the Passon Performance street slick shift kit also.
Slick Shift Kit

I am hopeful that this combination, ligher flywheel, no marcell disc, and slick shift sliders will allow for clean quick shifts.

Clutch and flywheel have arrived, will be starting the swap in a few days. Hoping my Passon Performance slick shift kit arrives shortly.

Could you elaborate on the slick shift kit? There is zero description on Passon’s website. Have you spoken to them about it?

From what I see, he just does a slick shift on the sliders and he is leaving the syncros in tact.

Slick shifting is removing every other tooth from the gear and the sliders. When I do it for a street/strip car, I take every other tooth off the syncros too. They shift better.
