Hey guys, Im new to the group I mostly just read the threads, first time poster. I have a 1970 duster 340 4spd/buckets black on black with 1972 fenders and interior also tagged as a 1972 340. Im at the point where i need to decide on side markers... I can either patch the rear quarter(70) and make necessery holes for the 72 side markers or just delete all side markers completely. There is also an option to find 70 front fenders but it seems the least most realistic in my area. What are everyones thought on this situation and pics woukd be awsome too.
Thanks Ryan

Some areas require lighting to be in place & functional, have you checked into that yet?

I thought about deleting mine too, but worried about the legalities of doing so.

I'm no lawyer, but I was always under the impression that cars only have to meet the safety and emissions requirements mandated for their model year. Which is why I can drive a car with only one side mirror and no airbags. Your state might differ though.

But if it was on the car to begin with, then it was probably mandated in that model year. At least, that's what I would think.

1970 was the first model year that side lights with reflectors were required.

I put ‘68 sidemarkers on my ‘74. They almost work in the holes for the ‘72+ markers. Of course, you’d have to modify all 4 holes if you did that.

If you can legally do it I would one of the biggest drawbacks to the '72 and up dusters is those fugly generic sidemarkers!!

I think in the states, if it came with side markers then they are required. Same goes with seat belts and shoulder belts. I think in Maryland and car needs at least lap belts. If it didnt come with shoulder belts it is ok to run just a lap belt. If it came with them you have to have them. This probably varies state to state so you should check into it for your location.
Dont they repop the 70 fenders? I dont mind the 72+ side markers. Just wish they were a little more sturdy. The damn pegs break off easy and they get cracks in the lens.

They make repo 1970 fenders but they are about $600 plus shipping per side in Ontario CAN. Not a huge fan of the 72 plus fenders, but its a 72 according to the tag.

You guys should live in Virginia. Register the car as an antique (25+ years old), run antique tags, and you don't have to get the yearly inspection. Can't be a daily driver but that's not a problem for me.

North Dakota has no yearly testing on any car. I have antique plates and can drive it all year long. my 73 side markers suck and I think the 68 are the way to go or delete them I wonder how many cops are gonna look to see if you have side markers or just smile and love your car. you all should register your cars under my address one time registeration

Shaved mine (amongst other things). I have yet to be questioned by the 'authorities'. No inspection where I'm at. Would also depend somewhat, I imagine, on how savvy an inspector is about such things. Also registered as a 'Collector Vehicle' so it's nice not to have to buy tabs every year.

We do not have annual inspections here. No emission testing in my county either. In fact, if its 25 yrs old and you run historic or street rod tags, no inspection at all is required to tag it.
Cops don't mess with the old cars here.

No inspections, no smog checks, normal registration, daily driver.

First off welcome to the forums. I'm also form Ontario, down near Windsor. I don't think you'll have much problem shaving the corner lights as you only need a safety once. Even then, most shops wouldn't notice or care. As for what to do, do what makes you happy. I've got a 1976 Duster and I'm using the 73-76 markers. There plastic, but they work and can get repro.

I'm sure you can find what you need on this forum and ship them to a border city and go get them. Should save some money.
