I don't know much about welding. There is plain old-fashioned gas welding and electric welding and a few newer types of gas welding. My question is, when using aluminized and/or stainless steel components, do I need to find a muffler shop that uses a particular type of welding equipment? Thank you.

Not really - easiest is mig for tacking pipes together or welding pipe to flanges, etc. A custom header shop might use tig to build headers.

The biggest thing in welding is what to metals your welding together and what your welding them together with.

While to can use nearly anything to put nearly any to metals together, the quality and longevity could suffer greatly if your not paying attention or caring.

If you take the time to goggle what can and can not or should not be done there is always a welding shop to do it for you.

I don't know? My buddy's shop is the only one that I know of that welds stainless the right way. He uses stainless wire and helium gas, It also uses a special regulator for helium. He also has a bender for 3",4 " pipe for HP diesels. All in all it was a very pricey set up.

Well, you wouldn't want to use a stick arc welder, but MIG or TIG or even brazing are all acceptable.
