Shop Heat

-
Got 2 of them in my fully insulated and dry walled 768 sq ft garage with 12 ft walls. I was able to heat it to 70 degrees this week with single digit temperatures this week (takes several hours). I paid $125.00 each for them from Tractor Supply.

I bought one of those about 3 years ago. Not happy with it at all. Looked like a good unit, fan came loose on the hub, wire terminals got loose and it wouldnt get my shop past 45 degrees. And its noisy.
I found an old industrial heater for 80 and disconnected one element so it wont burn out the wall thermostat. I use it just to keep shop from freezing. And it at least makes wind.

Eventually I would like to insulate my garage and run natural gas to it. Then get a furnace and use that.

I have a 30x40x12 insulated. It don't get real cold where I live.I bought a 70,000 but diesel\kerosene heater with a thermostat.the other day it was 32 outside and the thing liked to have sweated me out.I have to keep turning the thermostat down

I go through 2, 100# propane bottles a year. My garage is well insulated and I keep it between 50 and 60*f when I'm in there which is nearly all weekend and occasionally at night until spring arrives then I practically live out there.
I'll get pics up in a bit.

The upstairs is unheated and 50* is plenty warm when your moving around but I have to admit I'm frugal with my propane use.

What unit are you using?

A Modine HDS 45, 45,000 btu unit. Good for a 2 to 2.5 garage space. I really love it. It uses outside air for combustion thuis no issue of spontanious dust combustion from using the garage air as combustion air.

I have that heater from Northern Tools in my 24x24 garage. I can easily maintain 60 degrees with the thermostat set at the halfway mark and the heater only running part of the time.

My garage is 28 x 32 and 10 foot ceiling. It is well insulated, needs to be in Northern Ontario. When I built it I put in Infloor heating, was very expensive at the time, best money I spent. I keep it at 50 F all winter long and it is great, takes days if I want to adjust higher, but if we are going to have a get together like at New Years I turn it up a few days before hand.
The thing I like best is when working under car laying on the floor no cold going through my old bones. As a bonus when I need to work on my truck or snowmachine I put it in the night before and come in the morning and all nice and dry.
Sure wish I had this in my younger days.
If anyone is building a new garage I would highly suggest looking into it.
Mike

These need some sort of fresh air or a window open before I can use one, I must be one out of 100 that will fall dead on the floor and have a head pounding head ace from being in a shop that is sealed to tight, I am going heat pump system because here in my area we don't get long cold winters, just those 40 degree days threw the last of fall and early spring day last for a couple months, then it's all about the hot days , A/C is our 8 moths of weather problems for working in a shop..

My garage is a slightly over sized two car. I have a furnace buddy who's installed lots of the Mitsubishi mini split combo heater/AC, runs on electricity. Cost is around 3K, but the garage would be heated in the winter (45) and cooled (80) in the summer. We have a big temperature change here in the Midwest, so even though its pricey it might be a consideration....if I can convince the wife....lol.

I have a good friend that has an A/C co. He has a 3 1/2 tun package unit that got bent and on the top (bran new) he has fixed it and tested, he said I can have it for $1.500 if I drive 100 miles to little rock and pick it up, great deal  and yes it will be picked up as soon as my son comes home from his tour , playing music in spain and Germany ..

36 deep, 40 wide with 12 foot ceilings My sons and I are doing this together

9 foot ceilings and it is fully insulated, including the garage door.

Thank you. Do you notice a significant difference in your electric bill? I realized as I am working through this, that because my ceiling isn't insulated the heater that I have now will just run and never kick off. So I am just wasting money and energy. I need to insulate my ceiling first and then see what happens.

I appreciate everyone's responses in this thread. I was trying to find something in the short term so I can get the car shot in epoxy, but waiting until March or so, isn't the end of the world.
