I keep remembering from something I read that a person could buy a console and shifter for 340 Dart from the dealer up until 1973. Anyone have any info on this?

My 73 340 Dart Sport came from the factory with a floor shifter and console. If you wanted to add it yourself and buy the separate parts from the dealer, I'm sure a dealer would sell you the parts, but there's a lot to it. There's removing the column shifter and replacing the collars, and welding in the console brackets, and cutting the hole in the floor for the linkage, and the bracket on the trans to support that linkage. Again, if you knew what to order, sure. In 1979 I bought a factory 73 Dart Sport scoop from the dealer for my 73. Only Canadian Darts had 340's in 71, after that 318's and sixes, unless you bought the Demon/Dart Sport.

I thought I read that there was a dealer over the counter program where you could buy these 4 speed parts an install them yourself. Maybe I was dreaming....

A dealership would order & sell you any parts you asked for if they were available.

If ordered for a '70 4-speed car, you would get something '69 or older though since there were no 1970 A body 4-speed consoles offered.

Extra weight & rattles anyway...... ;-)

all the parts for the 70 A-body console shifter are available new at this point if you want to install one. IMO way better than trying to make 48 year old pieces work for something as complicated as a shifter. I've had a B&M Star shifter in my 70 Dart with a bench seat since the mid 1980s and love it. Regular detent shifting plus a ratchet shifter for the strip. I'm only on my second one after 30 years of hard use.

My 71GT. Orig auto console, converted to 4 speed including all 83 parts needed...
