Anti Thief devices.... what works

-
I thought about doing the same type of thing with the high beam switch. Basically certain things have to be on / off to engage starter.

I just take the coil wire with me when my car is left somewhere questionable. Another thing is to put flashing LED in the car. Mounted under the dash with a little switch to turn it on and off. It uses almost no battery voltage and is a great deterrent. I get them on eBay.

On my first '69 Dart back in the very early '70s I mounted a 6" school bell under the battery tray in the engine compartment. It was armed by a key switch that was in the fenderwell over the left front tire. The bell was connected to the dome light switches.
There were several early mornings I forgot about it and got a very rude awakening when I forgot about the bell and unlocked and opened the car door! I imagine it looked like a scene out of a comedy with me fumbling for the keys and trying to find the key switch in the fenderwell while that dang bell was doing its thing.

A big dog works wonders! I used to take my 92-pound Rhodesian Ridgeback with me everywhere I went. I'd leave him in the cab of my Dodge Ram with the windows down. He'd just sit there on the seat quietly waiting for my to come back. It was funny watching people give the truck a wide berth if they were parked in the next spot.

Watch who your friends are because it's usually a friend that steals it or a friend of a friend who knows a guy.
It is usually connected close to you.

After that build a garage, alarm the garage and have pre made graves dug just in case.

The rollback tow truck is the hardest to stop.

Great ideas guys. Thanks. To answer a few questions: I do not have a garage, I park in my driveway. I am leaning towards the lock cable to frame (hood to frame) and use a battery quick disconnect. Although I do have a tach, but I am a little unclear as to how to ground it? It is coming off an HEI ecoil, that has 2 wires that both act as tach, so one goes to tach in car, the other goes to the HEI. Are you saying by ground one of those feeds the car wont start?

What it amounts to is you put a switch between coil NEG and ground. If you have a tach, you already have a wire into the interior, just tee into it and put an unobtrusive toggle to ground.

Putting switches in the neutral safety? Waste of time. Most thieves know how to jumper a starter, and the Mopars are EASY. You need something that will slow them down to troubleshoot.

If I live long enough to get my 67 back together, not even the starter relay will be in the engine bay.

One problem with these girls is that it's just not that easy to lock the hood. My old 63 SS Chev you could just throw a chain and padlock through the hood latch

I kinda like my Rossi .357 revolver.

I agree w/ suspecting tow trucks. When my 1969 Dart was missing in front of my house in 1994, I vaguely recall flashing yellow lights thru the window while I was sleeping. That was in-town Atlanta, so a common occurrence. What cop is going to stop and question a tow truck when they'll just say, "we got a call ..."? Heck, the cops were even complicit in effectively stealing our minivan when my wife was hit. They called the tow truck, she asked them to leave the van at our house 3 blocks away, but the driver refused and took it 4 miles to their impound yard. A detective agreed with me that was auto theft, but wouldn't do anything about it and I was forced to pay mileage and storage.

Ok I am interested in this. So if I test this, take my tach wire which is hooked up to my tach, instead attach it to ground, try to start the car and the car should not start. Correct? and there is no damage to my Coil or Dizzy by grounding out that wire, right??

She never sleeps!!! If I put the kids in the car, no one can come near it.

You don't want to leave it that way with ignition on for "several minutes." If you are trying to save your car, and "that happens" it might damage the coil, but "so what" if you save the car??

Otherwise, yes that is the way to test it. The coil NEG where the tach hooks is switched on and off to trigger the spark by the ignition box. "Pulsed." Same thing with older ignition points. So if you ground that, the box/ or points cannot open that circuit and cause the spark

If I am leaving my car somewhere questionable I will take the wire from the coil with me.

It’s possible to stop rollback guys but it is EXTREAMLY inconvenient. All you have to do is put the car on jack stands and remove the rear end then sleep with it. If they go through the trouble to find an abody rear end then they can have the car.

Like a couple blocks and wheel dollies won’t solve that problem, and they carry both. I sold my parts car to the yard with no K frame or front suspension. Rollback still picked it up it, no problem.

If they’ve got a rollback, they’ve got your car if they want it.

If you have rims with holes in it, buy a plastic drain hose and run a chain thru it. Then loop it thru two wheels on the same side of the car.
Hard to drag a car when 2 wheels are skidding. Lock it with a pad lock.
I'd prefer the drivers side so it can be scene. A bit extreme but it works.
The drain tube protects the rims from the chain.
You need like 15ft of at least 5/16 link welded link chain- 3/8" will work but is large and may not fit thru the rims.

If someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it. Be careful where you leave your car & keep your insurance up to date :)
