67 barracuda notchback restoration

Ok time for the latest update. Its been a long time. I am modding my 67 to use the 68 up style gas tank straps. Up to 67 it was 1 sideways strap holding the gas tank in place. I was never comfortable with that when i took the car apart. When i welded in my new spare tire well, and made my new spare tire bracket, i made it with the 68 up rear brackets that drop thru the well to catch the J hooks for the back of the 68 up gas tank straps. Now i have to mod the shock tower crossmember for the straps to hook in at the front.

Thanks Cosgig for coming to the rescue. Geof was cutting up a pretty rusted out 68 cuda parts car, and cut out that crossmember so i can section in the pieces needed to hook up the front tank straps. I did some initial sand blasting, then spotweld removal to pull it all apart took me about an hour with a rotabroach spotweld cutter and careful drilling to not go all the way through, just deep enough to seperate the pieces to keep the piece i need intact. I will drill holes in it later where i want to rosette weld it in at its flanges. I'd drill till i saw a little brown puff of rust, then wedge the screwdriver in between and carefully pry to pop the weld, then on to the next weld etc..

Lastly I drilled out the strap reinforcement plates, and will sand blast all the rest of the rust off, then reassemble the reinforcements with a bit of weld thru primer between everything, and epoxy primer over the top of it all.

The last 2 pix show the existing crossmember, and how it needs to be modified for the fwd tank straps. I will cut out the middle section of the original lower crossmember sheetmetal and flush weld this section in its place. When done you wont even be able to tell it was sectioned in.

Heres pix.
