You old school racers are going to love this...

We had the same in Austria too, in the late 80s.
In Vienna it happened on the 4 - lane 'Triester Straße', near Graz on the 2-lane 'Flughafengerade'.
American and fast European cars, then mostly turbo cars (Renault 5, Mitsubishi Lancer).
Clearly illegal, always on saturday afternoon/night and only as long till the cops came....those were the days...

During the 80's my brother was importing 'gray market' cars from Europe to the US and converting them to US spec cars. I worked for him on occasion driving the cars from his Milwaukee shop to the EPA lab in Chicago where they underwent emission and safety certifications.

One day he sent me south in a Renault R5... at the first Illinois highway toll booth I pulled in next to a red Camaro. The Chevy driver looked at that R5 with it's tiny size and huge rear tires and just laughed. I didn't blame him as those cars looked just like the Renault LeCar Econo-box that was built right in Kenosha, WI just a few miles back down the road.

Anyway I pulled out of the toll booth light on the throttle until that Camaro pulled past me... then I goosed the go pedal a bit and pulled along side of him... gave him a thumbs up then hit the gas and blew his *ss away! Never knew what hit him...

On the return trip I drove a twin-turbo Celica... pretty impressive when you can mash the pedal at 60 and break the tires loose with a six cylinder under the hood!

I mostly drove M-B cars but there was the occasional Ferrari, DeTamaso or Rolls-Royce, too. Fun stuff.
