Around my neighborhood we raced in Wisconsin Ave. right in downtown Milwaukee or took a trip to the burbs... These guys ran up in Ontario.

Well, I’m not quite that old.... LOL!
But the song remained the same for me.
Work hard, play hard. Race when we could.

Cool. I was too young to race. But the rivalry ran strong up and down my block.
A couple mustangs,a gtx and a dart. Those 4 guys chased each other around all the time. My brother ran a ‘57 chevy.....

I first saw this video a few years back and always thought it was damn cool. Cars use to mean so much more than a "means of transportation". It was an all consuming life style that unfortunately went the way of the dinosaur...

Just for the record, not ALL of us drove by hanging on to one of the steering wheel spokes!!!

Your absolutely right. Guess what I'm referring to is that when I was a kid virtually everyone was into cars. Souped up stuff was everywhere and all your days revolved around cruising, hanging out, racing and of course picking up chicks...

We did this kind of street racing in Richmond CA, it always began on McDonald Ave while cruising Saturday nights, when you found a willing competitor(s) we would then head out to the pretty much abandoned warehouse district near Point Richmond where the real racing would take place.......occasionally, the cops would announce their arrival miles away with sirens blaring and lights flashing, some would make it out fast, others who couldn't escape fast enough would just sit there pretending we were just hanging out talking car stuff. Some of us would get tickets anyway, mostly for equipment violations, I seemed to always get a few. The good old days!

Very much the same here in the UK back in the 80's. Last Saturday of the month and the famous "Chelsea Cruise" was on, but after, the real fun started, off to Trinity Road for some Street racing, 4 lanes wide at the lights with normal cars in the mix, not the best scenario. Never forget the night of the big police bust there. They pulled every american car over including me in my then '65 Mustang Fastback K code. Spent over 2 hours there while they went through all the cars, time they got to me they just said move on, I wasn't 100% keen on the street racing stuff anyway, thats when I took it to the track.....remember those days with fond memories though!

We had the same in Austria too, in the late 80s.
In Vienna it happened on the 4 - lane 'Triester Straße', near Graz on the 2-lane 'Flughafengerade'.
American and fast European cars, then mostly turbo cars (Renault 5, Mitsubishi Lancer).
Clearly illegal, always on saturday afternoon/night and only as long till the cops came....those were the days...

During the 80's my brother was importing 'gray market' cars from Europe to the US and converting them to US spec cars. I worked for him on occasion driving the cars from his Milwaukee shop to the EPA lab in Chicago where they underwent emission and safety certifications.

One day he sent me south in a Renault R5... at the first Illinois highway toll booth I pulled in next to a red Camaro. The Chevy driver looked at that R5 with it's tiny size and huge rear tires and just laughed. I didn't blame him as those cars looked just like the Renault LeCar Econo-box that was built right in Kenosha, WI just a few miles back down the road.

Anyway I pulled out of the toll booth light on the throttle until that Camaro pulled past me... then I goosed the go pedal a bit and pulled along side of him... gave him a thumbs up then hit the gas and blew his *ss away! Never knew what hit him...

On the return trip I drove a twin-turbo Celica... pretty impressive when you can mash the pedal at 60 and break the tires loose with a six cylinder under the hood!

I mostly drove M-B cars but there was the occasional Ferrari, DeTamaso or Rolls-Royce, too. Fun stuff.

Old Dixie Hwy. East Ojus and Krome ave. West of Opa-locka, (Miami) Florida, is where we would do the deed, (circa 1963-67) until I left for the Air Force. They would tow them in and trailer them in.

In 73 I was 17 and ran a black 64 Dodge more door with a 413 that I had pulled out of an Imperial. I had M/T Headers on it, a DC purple shaft and 915 heads. AVS carb and a flex fan..lol Had thrush mufflers right behind the headers and it was just a big hum inside, until I would slide under and take them right off. Lol. And it was easy cause in 73 both the front and rear was up high. That old Dodge was damn fast on the street back in 73.
10 years later and I still ran around in a more door 64 Polara. Good old days.

Thanks for posting it but the video looked kinda cheesy to me....been to a few street races in my day....NEVER seen anyone jump in the engine compartment even close to that B.S. move....or do a clutch and / or shifter adjustment from inside the car with the shifter boot on.

Looked more like reality TV before long before the Discovery Channel.... Ok for the powder puff division I guess.

You guys are right.....street racing and cruisen in the early 70's was a blast.

Senaca Blvd for me when I was a teen.Local car guys hung out at the Boron gas station at the top of Senaca. Big time street racing in the 60's and 70's.Started to fizzle out in the 80's,but there were a few die hards.
