I have an ebody 8 3/4 rear end that is 3" wider than my duster 7 1/4 rear end that I'd like to swap. If I move the shackles in to fit, I'd have the big bolt pattern and an 8 3/4 in the Duster and only be adding 1.5" to the width on each side..... There must be something wrong with this brilliant (ha ha) idea. Advice?

A body drum to drum 57 1/8 E body drum to drum 61 5/8 Doesn't give you much room for a decent size tire

If you manage to figure out a wheel/tire combo with the right backspace to make it work, you're golden. I hope you don't like the deep dish wheel look...

Ben is correct, that you use a 3" wider rear end you can counter that with 1.5 inches more backspacing on each side.
With all the custom Mustang wheels out there it isn't too hard to do.

Cut it down. Spring perches are cheap, new housing ends can be bought, it's just money, LOL.

Need someone that want's to trade....
It would be hard for someone to trade a E body for an A body one.
A body ones fit nicely in E body's huge fender-wells, and are wanted for a cheap axle to put fat tires in a E body.

I sold my E body rear and bought a B body for my Duster. Fit perfect with advice from the guys here on proper backspace. I made money on it. Don’t ruin an E body rear. Sell it and fund what you need.

Agreed! if you do this you'll never be able to rotate your tires 'cause front and rear offsets would be so different.
If you can't find an A, 8-3/4, then how about an 8-1/4, or pre '71 B body 8-3/4, or even an F body 8-1/4 might be Ok.

Actually it would be the opposite from all the backspacing inside

Or......

You could run it & remove your rear quarter panels, but that would be ugly.

A 1970 back b-body unit with perches moved in is a better choice if an A-body unit can not be found as mentioned above.

We had a narrowed dana in a 67 belevedere, springs moved inside the frame. Still had to de flate the slicks, w/ 16" slicks , we had to take the shocks loose and let the rear dangle , w/ no air in the tires to cram them in. There are more than one way to skin the proverbial cat. Even took the bolts lose in the spun alum. wheels and turned them around, because we couldn`t afford the correct rims for that set up. Car went 10.40 on the best runs on a terrible, barely prepped track, "back in the day". On a few runs it held the front wheels about 6-8" in the air , till I pulled second gear. Never ever forget that feeling !!
