I’m looking for a 1971 era Florida license plate to put on my 71’ duster. It looks like this. This is the only one the DMV will let me use.

I was going to recommend Ebay but, 99% of the ones on Ebay are blue background, which suggests that blue plate was the predominant plate of the day and only being able to use a white one might not be accurate info. My experience with DMV workers is that you can ask 3 and get 4 different answers. If you haven't I would read the actual ordinance yourself.

My Dart originally came from Florida (I'm in Illinois), so I tried to locate a '68 plate for it. From what I found when I got mine, I think in your example, "fo" is a weight class, and "49" is the county in which it was registered. Is that what you need to register it?

Its not so much only being able to use the White background, its that you need to use the one from that year. Florida used to issue new plates each year but which spanned 2 years, and changed color for quick identification of out of date registrations. I have a 69 plate which is White on Green. They allow you to register your antique car with the year that relates to what year your car is only if you want rather than the standard current Florida plate or the plethora of stupid plates for any cause, school, branch or whatever.

Ryan, good Luck finding that tag as it was a mid year tag only. You need to talk to a supervisor in Tallahassee and you should be able to run the 70-71 tag we talked about.

I used a 1973 8W-xxxxx plate (Volusia 3500 lb car) for the Scamp no problems. Sent it, the application and 60 bucks to Tallahassee. Had it back in like a week. With the registration and sticker. And they sent me back a check for $20 for some reason. Yes, it has to be the year of your car, at least 40 years old (I think).

I think 1971 was white on blue? There's Orange County plates all over ebay.

FO is for a half year for a trailer???? You probably want 7W-xxxx.

Edit: Now I see your issue. Id ship a blue/white 70-71 tag to Tallahassee. Screw talking to a local yocal. If I remember the only way you can do it is by mail. Its correct for your car. Good luck!

My plate for my 69 Dart is Green background with white lettering. And the county was always the county first. Mine is 3-XXXXX. The second was the cars weight class 3D, 3-,3W, 3WW. The 3 represented Hillsborough County. I'm old enough to be around when these were in use. Funny thing is during this time when you sold your car, the tag went with it to the new owner if in the same county.

Hey thanks everyone. yeah I had an NOS blue w/white lettering “70-71” I sent in several years ago. It was returned stating improper year. I talked to the guy who sold me the tag he said it’s honestly depends on who is working sometimes they take it sometimes don’t. He suggested just keep sending it in until they did accept So idk lol maybe will just do that. Bc the white plates w/orange letters are hard to come by

I believe you will find that tag as a Half year tag only as that is what it was. Tallahassee is full of idiots.

Here in Colorado you can use Year of Manufacturer Plates But you have to have a pair and you fill out a form and send it in. I did and never heard anything. I sent it in again and they sent it back saying they needed me to send photos of the plates with the request. (No where on the website does it say anything about photos) so I did and they sent me the proper registration papers. Downsides here in CO, 1. you can only drive with those plates on while going to or from a car show, parade or other "Official" event. 2. you have to keep your regular plates in the car at the same time, 3. keep the registration for the plate and the registration for the car in the car at the same time. 4. has to be plate from year of car manufacturer (that one I understand) ---GOT TO LOVE OUR GOVERNMENT!

Yes I would try again. Maybe that bonehead has moved on. Haha

Florida YOM Plates May Be Refurbished/Repainted

This guy posted some information some of which I don't know is correct especially regarding restoring the plate. but he does suggest checking on a website if a plate is still in use. There might be a possibility that the original plate you submitted was still in use and that is why they rejected it.
