I cannot make a decision if I would like a sure-grip differential or leave it open. 70 Swinger w/340 4 speed, mostly stock engine w/ Thermoquad carb and 71 cast iron manifold. I have a budget of around $500, and pretty much Dr. Diff has everything I would need to change it out. The car doesn't hit the track, but I don't see the point of leaving 90 foot long burnouts. LOL

I am going to keep the ring and pinion gears, (3.23) and its a 741 case with the stock axle bearings, not green. If I changed out the differential do I have to mess with pinion depth, or just adjust the back lash via adjusters?

Before you remove the open carrier measure the backlash the gear is running. Install the suregrip and set backlash to same setting and your good.

With a budget of $500 pick up a used center section that already has a sure grip, with whatever gears.
I just bought a complete center, with 489 case, sure-grip and 5.38 gears for $375.
Deals are out there if you just look.

Well,Dicer
It really depends on who's driving it and how he's driving it.
But since I had a 340-4gear with 3.55s a long time ago, I can say this; 340s and manual transmissions have to have SGs. Some things just gotta be.
Those Darts are severely traction challenged, and when the inside wheel spins on every turn, that gets old so so fast. And Every time I wanna move out; Poof! no traction. I gotta wait til second gear or 40mph to get traction.....so so lame, and I still can't floor it.
And when I come flying around the turn, and the back end steps out in the middle of it;Poof! everything goes for a dump, so so lame.
And when I wanna show off a bit, well, I can't. So SO lame.
and I'm always wondering if this is the day that cross-pin is gonna launch itself outta there, and if it does, where's it gonna go, what's gonna happen when it gets there, and if it doesn't actually exit all the way, what's gonna happen when the rear-end locks up? Lame. So so lame.

Oh wait, maybe you don't drive like me,lolame
OK I'm just funning. None of that ever happened to me, since 1969........Cuz all my performance Mopars either came to me with SGs or got SGs,pronto .

good idea to just hold on to your money look for a complete carriers and and change out the whole assembly for a 742 or 489 housing with Sure Grip.

You do not do anything with the pinion when you change out the carrier. You just remove the carrier take the ring gear off put it on the Sure Grip. Put the Sure Grip back in, Set your backlash.

If you are going to buy the cheap sure grip don't bother. The cone type SG is junk.
I will take all your cast off cone style junk, I have had more issues with clutch style.

I just saw 3 of them a week ago at a swap meet. Didn't even look twice. My cousin has a 12 bolt with that cheap diff in it. He is tight with a buck unless it comes to booze, gambling, whores and weed.

I had a Auburn Gear cone type professionally installed in my Dodge Ram. It lasted about a year. The springs in it broke. I was like WTF!
I went back to open carrier.
Been looking at Detriot Trutrac locker now because I will be installing a 408 pretty soon.
Just me thinking... if I have high performance engine and only one tire is getting traction... why do I even need a high performance engine??

Sounds like someone I should know

SHOULD only need to set backlash. Bu t do check the pattern, too. Some guys prefer to not reuse the ring gear bolts. Of course, you'll have to set the axle shaft end play, and make sure the "button" is in good shape.

If u have reall hi h.p., don`t waste ur $ on that tru trac, I had one in a vega /approx. 600 horse/14x32`s, and it wouldn`t hold. Sold it to an offroader for $50. I went to a Detroit locker, and have used one in every car since.

Gentleman thank you for your input, much appreciated. I will be looking for a locking type differential on CL, rather it be a cone or clutch type. I am thinking either one would work great for me. Would like to have the Detroit Locker…have to check the prices.

AJ thanks, it pretty much sums it up for me, you’re right, you hit the nail on the head, so so lame……. LOL

Well after an exhausted search on the CL, I just decided to go ahead and buy one rebuilt. The shop is local (hour drive) and paid him the cash. Got the ratio I wanted, and the smaller u-joint yoke. 489 case.

Did you ask if he had one with a crush sleeve eliminator installed?

If you want to sell the 1970 741 3.23 complete, I will message you with my email address.
